I submitted my leadership app (I actually did the common app but was invited to the leadership one) on November 1. I thought I'd start a thread for the decision letters that should be coming in about a month or so. Comment when you got your decision and post stats here! :)

I submitted mine a few days ago for the Dec 1st deadline and got a response that I’ll be getting a response in about 6 weeks.

@spnlove
I also got the Leader’s App and did the Common App. Submitted on November 1st to meet the EA I deadline. I was submitting my ACT scores from this past October, so Willamette didn’t receive them until November 14. (I called and they said this was fine, and I should still definitely receive my decision by December 15.)

It was November 21st last year when people first started getting their decisions, so I’m really excited and hoping mine comes within the next week.

By the way, here’s the template for posting decisions!

@UFOninja: have you gotten anything yet? I haven’t heard anyone getting a response :\ Think it might take longer this year since WU is more popular now.

@spnlove
No, nothing yet. I hope it comes soon because I lack any patience, haha.

Seriously, though, I might be one of the last people to get a decision back. The mail where I live is super unreliable. I’m taking a gap year right now, and last year I didn’t even get half my decision letters in the mail!

Does anyone know if admissions are received first by mail? On my app it asked 2 ways I wanted to be informed.

my mail seems okay and I’m only a state away from WU (Cali) so I don’t think it’s the mail problem, they probably haven’t sent the acceptances/rejections yet.

Is WU a first choice for either of you? I’m so worried about the rain in oregon since I practically grew up in sunshine hahaha

I technically applied for the Dec. 1 deadline even though mine was in by Nov 15th so there is no way they have sent mine. Hopefully I might get it before the rest of people who applied on the deadline but probably not.

I don’t really have a first choice because I want to keep my options open and not get my heart set on a school if I am rejected. Is willamette your first choice? If so, I wouldn’t be worried because a friend of mine goes there and he only had a 3.1 gpa which I think was weighted. If you have good recommendations, essays, interviews etc, Willamette is a place that will accept you in spite of your downfalls (GPA, standardized test scores, etc.)

I’m from Portland so I am pretty used to the rain. I can’t handle the heat though. Or extreme cold for that matter haha. I am sure people exaggerate about the weather. You learn to embrace it. Right now, it’s 43 and completely clear. That’s the tradeoff. Either you have rain which traps in some heat or it’s much colder. I am sure it is way worse on the east coast and midwest where it is below 32 most of winter…

So my college list is split really weirdly. There’s “realistic top choices” and “reach top choices.” “Reach top choices” are basically, “I’d LOVE to go here, but it’s highly HIGHLY unlikely that I will get accepted.” “Realistic top choices” are, “I might not want to go here quite as much as top reach schools, but I’d still love to go there, I would be really happy going there, and actually have a chance of getting accepted.”

That being said, Willamette is my second choice on my “realistic list.” (Chapman and Franklin & Marshall are tied for first choice on my “realistic list.”) I see Willamette as being the best of both worlds: a creative environment, and a good reputation for professional grad school. At least, that’s what I gather from what I’ve read.

I’m pretty sure I’d love Oregon! I’m from Colorado and it’s sunny here all the time, but I hate it. I know it sounds weird, but I much prefer overcast and rainy weather. Everyone says I should live in London, lol.

@thirrdplanet
I emailed a couple weeks ago. Decisions are sent via snail mail.

@thirrdplanet. WU isn’t my first choice but it is at the top of my “realistice top choices” as UFOninja puts it hahah. I would be very happy going there but I’m not too sure if I will get used to the rain since I do love the sunshine. In psychology, my teacher was going on about how people who live in Oregon and Washington are more likely to be depressed due to the weather and I winced on the inside haha. I do also have quite a few schools on the east coast so it’s either death by rain or death by cold xD

@UFOninja- yeah, the things you said about WU are what draw me in too. I also like that it’s near Salem so there’s lots to do (hopefully). I heard Colorado is beautiful!! So I’m also going to apply to Colorado College, which is a bit higher than WU on my list. But CC usually offers less financial aid so we’ll see :)

Wouldn’t it be nice if we got in our reach top choice? ;)

I am pretty confident I will get in to willamette and I could see myself going there but it’s my too school much like you guys.

The thing about seasonal depression is true, my mom has it. It depends on the person and whether it will affect you that much.

I am applying to Colorado college also but I doubt I will get in…

Wow, it’s so weird that you guys are both applying to Colorado College! I was going to apply there, too (based on my mom’s urging; she really wants me to stay in CO), but decided against it because I wanted to go out of state. I’ve actually never understood why Colorado College entices people so much. Don’t get me wrong, it is a really good school! Prestigious, pretty campus, etc. I guess it’s because I’ve lived in CO my entire life, so the glamor is kind of lost on me, lol.

Colorado College is only about a 15-20 min. drive from where I live. I’ve been there numerous times and drive past it often, so if you guys have any questions about the college or the surrounding area, let me know! I’ve lived in Colorado since I was 2, so I know the area pretty well ^^

@spnlove
Getting into my top reach choice would be AWESOME!!! My first choice reach is Smith, but I highly doubt I’ll get accepted because:
- I applied last year and was rejected (I’m taking a gap year right now)
- The lady I talked to from admissions more or less told me that I don’t have a chance.

On the bright side, I had no idea what I was doing last year when I was filling out college apps and, as a result, my application as a whole kinda sucked -_-" I’ve polished it up quite a bit, so maybe that’ll improve my chances? I figured that it’s worth a shot, so fingers crossed!

What’s your top reach?

I feel the same way about Lewis and Clark. I could bike there. Or drive in 10 minutes. Reed is a little farther away. Probably 20 minutes which still feels to close although I love the school. Willamette is a great distance at ~45 minutes. I could easily get home on the weekends but at the same time I am not at all familiar with Salem and I could explore.

If you could say more about the Colorado Springs that would be great. I don’t know if I could live in such a conservative area…

@thirrdplanet
Colorado Springs is quite a big area, so it’s hard to generalize. But Colorado College is located in what everyone refers to as “Downtown.” All of Colorado Springs big events, like parades and Territory Days, occur here.

There are tons of super tall, glass-and-steel buildings. There are also a lot of small shops, like used bookstores. I guess it’s almost like a quaint city feel? There’s everything from a Meeker Music to small coffee shops to skyscraper-like banks and hotels. The Pikes Peak Center is also located Downtown. This is where things like concerts, opera, ballets, plays, etc. take place.

Colorado Springs is NOT known for its bus service. Thankfully, CC is located in the middle of everything so it’s very easy to get everywhere Downtown by walking or bike. The best thing about Colorado Springs is our incredible public library system! Seriously, it’s awesome. They let you check out new movie releases and video games.

Downtown should have all your basic needs (entertainment and necessities), but if you want to find a Walmart, Target, or movie theater, you’ll need a car. They’re all about a 10-15 min. drive from CC. I believe there’s also a mall about 20-30 min. away. You could also take the bus, but please note that they typically show up only once every hour.

If you want to go to Denver, it’s about 1 1/2 hours away (but often takes longer due to traffic). There’s a Greyhound bus that will take you up there and back for $33-$39.

As politics go, please know that I’ve lived here my whole life and don’t have anywhere to compare it to. I myself am unaffiliated with somewhat liberal views. There was a pretty strong Tea Party movement here a few years ago. There were also smaller protests about the Wall Street thing. (Btw, almost all protests in Colorado Springs take place Downtown in Acacia Park, so you’ll be able to see everything up close if you want.)

Colorado Springs, in general, is a fairly conservative area. If you’re driving outside of the Downtown area, you might see a few billboards protesting things like abortion. During the election, more than half the cars on the highway that had political stickers were supporting Mitt Romney. The closest Safeway to me had a nearby sign as long as my front yard that was advertising Mitt Romney. Typically, strong displays of conservatism like this are only really prevalent during election time. (Then again, I have nowhere else to compare it to, so please take that into consideration.)

It’s pretty common knowledge here that the further you travel up north, the more liberal people are. CC is located in southern Colorado Springs, so the surrounding area is more conservative as a whole (although CC, by itself, is very liberal).

On the other hand, I don’t think Colorado Springs is NEARLY as conservative as people make it out to be! Some people are under the impression that everyone who lives in Colorado is a religious, radical conservative with a mentality from the '50s…and who also owns a gun. -_-" Uh…yeah…this is pretty inaccurate, especially for the younger generation. As a general statement, the older people are typically conservative, while the majority of our generation have more moderate and liberal views.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is yes, I guess Colorado is conservative, but it’s note quite to the degree of what people think. Mainly it’s just that the Republicans here are very vocal, while moderates and Democrats typically don’t advertise there views. (Remember, Obama did win Colorado this November.)

Also, I’m talking about Colorado Springs as a whole here, which is a VERY large area. Downtown is a very small portion of Colorado Springs, and I’d say it’s less conservative than the rest of the city.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know, feel free to ask :)

Oh, and despite what people think, Colorado is NOT mini Canada. Unless you live way up north, you’re not going to be skiing daily in August, lol. Colorado Springs is surprisingly hot and dry. The past summer was a killer; it typically was a little over 100 degrees. EVERY DAY. For ALMOST THE ENTIRE SUMMER. Seriously, I’m willing to bet that it was the hottest summer on record. Typically it varies between low 80s to low 90s in the summer months.

Winter’s are pretty mild compared to what people think. Yes, we get snow and icy roads, but it would be really weird to get anything more than 3"-6". I can only remember a couple years where we actually had a white Christmas. March, on the other hand, always seems to be insanely cold.

Which leads me to another point: Colorado’s weather is insanely unpredictable. I’ve experienced February’s where I could go outside in a T-shirt and shorts. Yet I remember one Easter where there was over a foot of snow outside. (Yes, in April!) Temperature varies drastically, especially during the transition of summer to fall/winter to spring. Sometimes the temperature fluctuates almost 20 degrees from one day to the next. Seriously, on Tuesday you might be wearing shorts, and the next day it’ll be 45 degrees.

And another thing: when I tell people I live in CO, they automatically assume that I live in the mountains and go skiing in the summer, lol. Actually, Colorado Springs is in southern CO, so the atmosphere is a lot different. You can see the mountains, but if you drive south towards Pueblo (I’m right between Pueblo and Colorado Springs), it’s nothing but rolling grass plains. A lot of people are surprised by that.

I think everyone’s weather has been messed up. I blame it on global warming. In Portland, we had a 3 month period without rain. The longest record since the 1800s or something crazy like that. I am not too worried about weather. It gets pretty cold here too and I don’t think it would be that much of a shock.

As for the conservatism, WOW. That is crazy. That sounds way more conservative than I thought. I am hoping this only happens around election time? Do townies really hate CC students? I feel like that would be true due to the radical difference in views. Is there a lot of interaction between the town and college? Of course in college I want to be exposed to different opinions but I don’t want to be harrangued by anti-gay anti-choice townies either. I am guessing a student there might be able to explain this better than you could.

I applied to Willamette on Nov 1st, and I’m hoping to hear from them soon! I live in northern California, so hopefully it’ll be quick haha

It says the decision will be released on Dec. 15th for EA 1 and Jan. 15th for EA 2.

Decisions are actually supposed to be out on or before Dec. 15th for EA I. I called up admissions about it because I was so worried, lol.
