Williams apps fall 20%; Amherst apps down 1%

Dartmouth has no supplemental essay either. The "supplement" they do have is their peer review... not the same thing, not completed by the applicant (obviously), but it's something.

The Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court is an Amherst man. That carries weight with many people who influence decisions as to where to apply.

He was a W. appointee but otherwise his credentials are impeccable.LOL

Wesleyan could have gone up because it does not ask for a supplement.

just like wustl

That's actually not the case. John Roberts went to Harvard for undergrad and law school. Harlan Fiske Stone is the Amherst grad who was Chief Justice.

Williams requires SAT IIs. Amherst doesn't.

That's why I didn't apply.

I realize that doesn't account for the entire discrepancy, but application requirements definitely have an effect. My two cents.

Amherst does require SAT IIs if you take the SAT but not with the ACT.

Williams College | Admission | Info for International Students

"Students are not required to submit the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or results of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)."

I concur completely. 7 percent of its Class of 2012 is International. If Williams doesn't even require that its foreign applicants have at least a respectable grasp of the English language... My two cents.

...

Just kidding, that's a ridiculous reason not to apply to a college.

I did not apply to Williams or Amherst because I was applying to 3 Ivies and felt that if I added the top 2 LACs, my list would be too top-heavy. In retrospect, I should have dumped WUSTL and picked Williams (nothing against Amherst, just that I struck up a really good conversation with the Williams rep.) On top of that, Williams and Amherst have pretty good fin aid, too.

Another turn-off for me, though, was the fact that a lot of these top LACs seem so isolated from their communities. This is mostly because they actually are, and I do not want to live in a tiny little village in the NE surrounded only by students. The larger universities, at least to me, seem more integrated into the surrounding city.

I think LACs need to either do more outreach, or better advertise their good relationship (even if it's not true) with the town/small city they're in.

definitely bonking head over not apply to Williams or Amherst--esp. since their apps went down, whereas Brown's are up 20%!
