Has anyone applied to the Williams College Math Camp?
crossing fingers son gets in. Also If anyone did this program last year and could comment on their experience or Stats that would be great.
My daughter applied. Praying she gets in. Her math psat scores great-73 10th grade, verbal not so much. What does your kid’s app look like?
Son applied. Has very good scores, but not perfect by any means. Tried all of the problems. Wish I knew about what the acceptance rate was.
Someone on this board shared that they had 200 applications last year, and accepted 20 kids.
@carlson2 I was afraid of that. Well, someone has to be the 20, right? Let’s hope 4 are me, you, @ivylynn10 and @momof2eagles.
200 sounds like a lot, but it really depends on the caliber of the student.
Yes. HideMe - what year is your son? My S is a junior - will be a rising senior when camp starts.
He’s also a junior. I figure the pool will be pretty strong. I mean, the application is really involved, so you have to be pretty motivated just to get through all of it.
Did your S find the problems challenging? Mine thought there were a couple easy ones, but most were really challenging.
11th grade son applied with good stats on PSAT ,SAT and SAT Math 2 subject tests(all above 750) but he had not done a lot of math extracurricular activities to show he was highly motivated/good fit for math camp but still crossing fingers. also in calculus but Math grades are always low A’s so not sure he really showed he was mathematically gifted but hoping they look more at standardized testing. He found the questions “doable” but challenging. He enjoyed working on it.
my guess is they are looking for a equal mix of boys and girls, geographic diversity, and a mix of grade ranges since program is open to 9-11th graders. hoping good news for everyone on this message board.
Anyone hear anything yet?
22 students confirmed for 2015 camp.
about 20 percent admitted.
My daughter just finished the camp on 7/15/2015. It was hard but she loved it.
She is considering applying Williams
son also loved the camp but found the math very challenging. He had just completed Ap calculus and Got a 5 on Ap exam but number theory was very different than Calculus. He loved being challenged. i heard about 120 applied for 22 spots. This was the third year they ran the camp so i think every year will get more popular. more applications and harder to get in. They did a wonderful job running the math camp. My son said Professor and 2 TA"S were great. Besides Math they also hiked, had wonderful inspiring lectures, math movies, and got to really feel like a college student at williams. Would recommend this to any student who wants to be challenged in math an get a taste of college life on the campus of the number one liberal arts college.
my son ultimately got into many top LAC including Pomona(he ultimately went there), swarthmore, middlebury, bowdoin, Vassar and Wesleyan and others but got wt listed at williams. posting this just so others know that its not a slam dunk if you do this program that you get into williams. Still glad he did the program as it convinced him he was a good fit for top LAC.
