Question from Parent: Summer Math Programs

Hi, everyone,

I’m wondering if any of you have recommendations of good summer math programs for kids who like math? I’m a coach of a MATHCOUNTS team (no, this does NOT mean that I am good at math) and I’m wondering if some of the boys on my team might like to do a summer program this year or next. What summer math programs do you recommend, or don’t you? Some of the guys on my team are already in a good school-year program, namely UMTYMP

http://www.itcep.umn.edu/umtymp/

but at least one or two of the guys might be interested in trying something in the summer, especially if the summer program gets into math that isn’t part of the usual standard curriculum leading to calculus.

Thanks for any advice or been-there-done-thats you have.

Good luck to those of you applying to college this year.

I went to Stanford University Math Camp last summer and it was AMAZING. You can study Number Theory or Topology, I took Topology. You have to be in 10th-11th grade this year and there is a qualifying test that they actually take quite seriously. It's four weeks at Stanford, classes in the morning, guest lecturers, and a research project of your choice covering something in Number Theory/Topology. I don't think there was a single person in the program who didn't love it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this program. It was quite possibly the four best weeks of my life, and I'm sure I'm not the only person there who felt that way.

Thanks for telling me about Stanford University Math Camp. That's the one that's called SUMaC for short, right?

Here's a thread with summer programs. Look at Texas137's post, where she lists math camps.
