I really love Williams, and I am thinking about applying ED.
My only thing is that I have noticed that A LOT of ED applicants are recruits. Is the Williams ED rate at 40% only bc of athletes? What is my shot as a non-recruit? ( I dance, but that is not a recruitable sport at all)
Yes, many ED applicants are athletes. That being said, applying ED will increase your chances - but not as dramatically as the ED acceptance rate may seem. I have been told this by my guidance councilor. She told me that is why UPENN’s ED rate is so large. I am assuming this is similar to Williams.
Also, some colleges will only recognize legacy status (UPENN) if you apply ED. So this will also dramatically increase the ED acceptance.
ED rates everywhere are inflated by recruits and legacies. That said, I still believe there is a significant ED boost at Williams (I got in ED, after all, haha).
All the ED acceptances I know that got into Williams were legacies, athletes or both, although I’m sure students get in who don’t fit into those categories.
The ‘odds’ are still higher, although obviously they’re not going to admit an under qualified applicant no matter the round of decisions. The odds are not markedly higher, but the advantage (and the demonstration of interest) are enough to make it a worthwhile exercise if you’re convinced it’s your dream school number one top choice, and if you’re certain you can afford whatever number the OFA decides to throw at you.
My daughter was accepted ED as a musician. She had a trial lesson with a teacher in the music department who in effect “recruited” her. If you dance you should visit, take a trial class, and speak to teachers in the dance department.
A very, very select few get in who are not recruited athletes in the ED pool. And those that do get accepted ED are likely those who would definitely have been selected in the RD pool.
My DS and DD were not high school athletes at all and both were accepted ED. However, they are very outdoorsy. It was their other activities that probably tipped the scales.
