Hey everyone
I was wondering if you guys have some sugestions for the williams supplement to help me brain storm
the quesion is "Imagine looking through a window at any environment that is particularly significant to you. Reflect on the scene, paying close attention to the relation between what you are seeing and why it is meaningful to you" which i suppose most of you already know

good luck to all the williams applicants :)
and thank you

I LOVED this prompt. I kind of did a literal window meshed with a figurative window, definitely a lot of room for creativity.
I think they just want to see how you see the world. You could take it from the stand point of a memory, a goal, or even your view point on an issue or topic.

Anything that shows your perspective would work

Work backwards. Rather than doing the prompt as mythmom suggested, forget about looking through a window. Instead, write about something that is significant to you, something you are passionate about and describe why it is meaningful to you. Once you have your essay written, work backwards and solve for the window part.

Yeah, I have the same question
is it bad to write about similar stuff for your williams supplement?
for example
I wrote about public speaking for my common app personal essay
then should i write about speeches or influential speakers for my williams supplement?

is that redundant or does writing bout it focus on my strong points?

To me it seems redundant, and focussing on speakers while looking through a window doesn’t seem the best use of a prompt either.

Either there something about your environment you love? Or look through the window of time to past or future. So many things you could do. What is something else you want Williams you know about you? Find a way to tell them. My S crafted his application to show his love of theater, music, classics, Star Wars (not kidding) and mythology. There are not many Classics or music majors at Williams so I do think this helped him be admitted. He is graduating this year as a Classics Major.

The application, sad to say, is really an advertisement for you. What are your most impressive/unique attributes?

Do you have a place you like to go or be at physically or in your mind? What does that say about you? D discussed being in the woods near a river as it’s not only where she went with her dad daily as a pre-schooler, but it’s where she developed an intellectual curiosity about the environment around her.

wow thanks everyone…
hmm… I know my strong points are leading and public speaking
i mentioned public speaking in my personal essay
I originally wanted to write about witnessing a historical event like the speech of Dr.King or even Lincoln and then elaborate on my future goals
but after hearing your responses I am not so sure anymore lol
there are so many ways to craft this essay
i am just…confused

thanks a lot everyone
you helped immensely :)

Don’t overthink this prompt. Make it personal and reflective. It’s okay to have it be a regular window into a scene from your life. Tell them a story about how that scene framed who you are right now. I’m sure they’ve seen every angle on “windows”, don’t stress about coming up with a new creative one. It’s about you, not the window. And of course, write it well.

Suppose you described a scene in a vision of your future where you are at Williams and thus used it to help talk about why you want to attend Williams at the same time?

That’s definitely one way to go about it! I’ve been mulling over this prompt for about a week now, trying to figure out what I want to say. I think this essay is asking you to reveal unique aspects of your personality not apparent in any other part of your application.

Using a vision in your future at Williams may or may not help reveal who you are. Like, you’re addressing two different things if you use this vision or using a scene that has occurred. Using the vision may fall short in portraying a deeper, more unique sense of who you are. But if you feel like it portrays who you are in a new light, go for it!
