Williams versus Pomona

Any feedback, pros/cons, etc.

Anyone else making this choice?

Six in one, half dozen in the other. They are both as good as it gets academically. They both have huge endowments. One may be stronger in a particular department; the other in some other department, but not much to choose from there.

Really, location is the biggie. Williams is in the mountains of New England. Pomona is in suburban Los Angeles. Williams is a bit bigger, but Pomona shares a larger campus with four adjacent undergrad colleges, so the overall feel is like a small university.

Williams, of course, has a more emphasis on athletics, being the undisputed heavy-weight king of Div III sports.

Southern California? Rural New England? Your call.

i would say middlebury is a contended for D3 sports king

kenyon, the best swim team.

you're all wrong, Div3 goes to Reed, hands down!

williams vs pomona is like yale vs stanford. both are great schools. williams, in my opinion, is a bit more prestigious. pomona offers much more considering that it's so close to LA and that it shares facilities with claremont colleges. personally..pomona...or ...hmmm..williams..i dont know really, tough decision.

Pomona is on my short list for 2006-2007 applicactions.
I'm applying as Economics major. This is what my list looks like:

Reaches:
Williams
Amherst
Pomona
(Middlebury?)

Fits:
Babson
NYU - this one's a reach
Boston University

Safeties:
Rensselaer
(Howard?) - only because of Full Scholarship

The LAC education is one of the most expensive @ $42,000, but...
It is the best.

I know this is a bit off the original topic of the thread, but williams is the undisputed king of DIII athletics- it's won the NACDA Director's Cup 9 out of the last 10 years, interrupted by UC-San Diego in 97-98. Middlebury was second in only 3 of the past 10 years.

Yes, but Middlebury has won far more Division III national championships than Williams. Here's the big difference--Williams is good to very good in almost all Division III sports (including wrestling, vollyball, rowing, and softball), which nets them lots of points in the Director's Cup standings. Middlebury kicks ass in the big New England sports--ice hockey, lax, and skiing. Both schools are Div III leaders in cross country, and both are very good in soccer, field hockey, and swimming and diving. So it comes down to this--Williams finishes close to the top in nearly every sport, while Middlebury finishes at the top for a select number of sports.

ok so it's Borda count vs. plurality system in terms of deciding which school is "better", athletically--both ways would choose schools really good in athletics. Maybe Williams does have a more athletic atmosphere, though, having a larger number of very good athletes in many sports, compared to a school that would throw a big victory party every now and then but doesn't have the pervasive athletic distinction?

yeah...but what about pomona versus williams...has anyone here had to make this choice?

I kind of have to...honestly I live on the east coast so it's a matter of realizing I don't want to go that far...but I heard pomona kids are pretty laid-back and have that california vibe, while williams kids are bubbly but a little more serious. you'd have to visit. what kind of environment are you looking for?

more laid back....but plane trips are long...hmmm

I know an awesome guy who I met at the Williams previews who is deciding between Pomona and Williams.

I'm not gonna give you pros and cons, but GO TO WILLIAMS!

I love that place.

Some girl who plays for the williams softball team was on "The price is right" and just won the showcase!

Well, actually, you probably saw a re-run, as she won the showcase several months ago. But yeah, it was pretty big news! Go Williams!

I am making the choice. I ruled Williams out b/c something felt off (we all know the feeling). Pomona is my #2 school. I like the cali schools better. I have a sister in one. Too bad they're so far away.

Interestingly, someone said Williams are more serious? Well I visited right before spring break there and I saw plenty of drinking, partying, and lounging. My mom was the one to spot the bongs through the window...I didn't see them :-/ . I found it funny that she liked the school more than me though.

There lies the problem. I would say most colleges students drink more than usual right before spring break.

What else felt "off" to you?

haha idc if they drink. its college.
um the campus set-up, although i hear many others praise the campus, seemed odd to me, but by off I mean I didn't get any good gut feelings. For a reach, I would prefer to feel as if I enjoyed EVERYTHING.
