20 minutes by foot from Amherst College to the center of town? It takes me about 6 - and I don't think I'm a fast walker. Amherst College's frats are banned from campus, so they don't play a significant role. Williams feels a lot more rural, but the location is beautiful.

Hi unregistered, I'msorry I said "20 minutes" earlier because that was I read somewhere sometime ago. But I was at Amherst two days ago, and yes, downtown is even less than 5 minutes away from the admin building. But I agree, I prefer the Williams location.

jhl, don't feel discouraged at all. I felt the same way looking at all the other stats when I was applying. I never dreamed I would get in, and I'm the only non-US citizen from my country in my class. It doesn't hurt to give it a shot if you think you want to go there.

Amherst has more international students, and is more diverse, and are on the verge of going need blind for intls, but I don't know when that's going to happen. Marx is a really cool guy, though.

Have you considered Middlebury? They have a solid foreign languages department.

Jrock,

Amherst would be really interesting if they go need blind (the 5 colleges thingy, open curriculum...).. but at present they are only providing 25 aid packages to internationals.. I've heard of them going need blind.. but when?

Middlebury is need blind.. but i'm not interested in foreign languages or the arts.. I'm more into the Physics/ sciences and the departments at Williams are fantastic.. At present, Williams is the most attractive option..even tho i dunno about my chances..

Are all internationals in Williams so 'tremendous'???

Middlebury also took only 1 person out of over 200 last year.

I heard from the financial aid office that they are talking about making Amherst need blind for internationals by next year. Give it a shot.

Apply to Williams! You've nothing to lose, except your money!
To be honest, I cannot answer your question. We intls rarely talk about what got us into Williams. Again, admission varies from country to country, because the competition increases as more people from your country apply.
So I won't say whether there are people with better or worse stats than mine. But there are many intls who are not into music/art/sports.
And I must mention I did cross-country in high school, and I'll be running next year; that may have been a plus.

But, apply dude, if you think Williams would be fantatstic for you.

Physics here is just the best.

Actually, Amherst is more selective than Williams is.

1 in 200 for middlebury? What do you mean?..
Jrock, why's amherst more selective than williams? Aren't their admission rates similar?

you could argue which is more selective either way...although amherst traditionally has a slightly lower admissions percentage....and a slightly higher median sat...and is much sweeter overall

I meant that middlebury took only 1 person out of over 200 applicants last year, which means their acceptance rate was less than 1%

But for the class of 2010, the acceptance rates for Willy/Amherst were close. I'm not sure about the statistic for international students, but Williams' is a little under 10%, and the yield, roughly 50%.

Again, jhl, as long as your school records are solid, and you're a top student, academically, if not otherwise, and you smash your A-levels/other exams, you're qualified - that's what they say on their website. Also, blast your SAT2's. What subjects are you taking?

Jimmy2588, less than 1%? Do you mean for international students or for all the applicants?

Of the three websites - Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore - I think Swarthmore's is the best. And it's the most prestigious-sounding of the three.

He's talking about the transfer rate, though I don't really know why.

Swarthmore is a great option.. but only 4% rate for those internationals needing aid.. while Will is around 9% for all internationals?.. Also the tutorial+physics at Will is tempting!..

I'm planning to take Physics and MathII SAT2.. Should i take a third one? I'm a Chinese.. so can i still take the SAT2 chinese? WIll it be considered another SAT2?..Would taking extra sat2s in chem and biology help at all?

Zspot9, are you going on aid?..

i apologize for not including more context to my response. i would apply to any of those schools that jrock mentioned minus middlebury because they only took 1 american applicant out of 200 last year, which makes it extremely selective.

Williams has the worst website ever! What's up with that? But i found Williams viewbook to be the best, by far.

"1 american applicant out of 200 last year"

Come again?

nevermind... lol.

I do believe you are (likely unknowingly) spreading false information.
