I’m currently I’m a high school senior, and I’m trying to decide on an ED school. I’m currently debating between Williams and Carleton, and have visited and loved both. I have the grades and ECs for both, but it would be easier to get into Carleton. I’m hoping to get some insight on the perceptions of both Carleton and Williams from both employers and grad schools, as well as their other strengths and weaknesses!
If you are qualified for both of these schools, then I personally would not be in favor of a predominantly strategic approach to admission (other than an “organic” ED application, which could of course positively effect your chances and might be a great approach in your case). So consider applying to the one you ultimately determine to be best for you.
On your specific choices, either could actually be great for your interests! As a distinguishing aspect, the tip could go to Williams if you might value attending college in the traditional, Northeastern collegiate orbit. Alternatively, in Carleton, you could choose an upper Midwestern experience if you would prefer something a little different.
I’d say Williams. Tougher admission, and you might get a slight ED bump. If you don’t get in, then apply to Carleton either RD or “Winter Early Decision” (Carleton name for ED2).
Carleton is great, but I think Williams gets a slight hat tip in prestige with grad schools.
