Why is that a major upset? Michigan isn't such a hot team this year. At least, not thus far. I guess the news is that Amaker's team beat his former players.

Harvard plays Ohio State in hockey this year--no other Big Ten schools.

hoedown,
I guess when I read the linked article above about how the U Michigan fans expected a double digit Wolverine victory, then I viewed Harvard's win as an upset. Too bad you guys won't have the opportunity to return the favor in hockey.

I have updated and expanded the rankings information that has been previously provided. I intend to add some attendance data when the conference games start as they are a more accurate indicator of student and local fan interest. Please make any suggestions on other material that might be interesting or useful to track. Thanks.

Their first 4 games were a YAWN:

Youngstown State
Akron
Washington (Pac-10 bottom feeder - 'cept my Bears lost to 'em)
Northwestern (lost to Duke!)

Uhh, who did Arizona St. play? San Jose St., San Diego St. and Colorado.

You can say the same for most teams, including SEC teams.

dOSU did crush some pretty decent teams such as Wisconsin (which btw, did crush Wash St.), PSU, Mich. and Purdue.

And while NU did lose to Duke – they were an OK team – finishing 6-6.
It took a “perfect storm” for the Duke win.

NU had outgained Duke 506 yards to 309 yards and still lost the game b/c the NU’s young HC had a massive brainfart and took points OFF the board.

That along with the inexperienced OC going away from the NU spread O, questionable penalties against the ‘Cats – over 100 yds (who normally don’t get penalized much) and the ‘Cats missing their best player (Sutton) pretty much sealed it for them (although, they still had a chance to win it in the last minute).

^ Uhhh, Colorado beat Oklahoma...

^ and Stanford beat USC - that still doesn't mean that the Cardinals were any good this year.

^ True...and 'furd beat Cal... damn. :(

FYI: It's "Stanfurd Cardinal"...the color, not the bird. Lame I know.

While I expected the typical Cal letdown in the 2nd half of the season (losing a game or 2 they should have won) - I certainly didn't expect Tedford to have Cal totally collapse as they did this season.

^ Yep, the team gave up. Longshore lost all confidence after the injury and exhibited no leadership, and the team suffered.

I fault Tedford for sticking by him all season.

In college athletics, major college football gets all of the attention in the fall. The USNWR Top 30 did pretty well in the football season as five schools will be going on to bowl games (UC Berkeley, U Virginia, UCLA, U Michigan and Wake Forest). Congrats to those colleges on their fine seasons and good luck in the bowl games.

Now that the calendar has moved to the winter athletic season, the USNWR Top 30 national universities are showing real strength in college basketball, eg:
1. For the Division I men, 8 colleges are in the top 35 of the Sagarin rankings (341 teams ranked)
2. For the Division I women, 6 colleges are in the Coaches Top 25 poll.
3. Three colleges (U North Carolina, Duke, Vanderbilt) have teams in the top 20 for BOTH men's and women's basketball.

Get to a game if you can and check out the fun and the excitement and if you can't score a ticket, all will be on national TV many times over the winter months (including the women).
