Wise parents, please read and help me!

Hey all CC parents

This is not a “my chance” post. I am thinking of applying to the ivy leagues, but I don’t think that I have a G.P.A in their range – 3.74uw, and 4.43 w. But there are something more I need to add to all of this. I came from Bangladesh in 2003, and I am graduating in 3 years from high school. And yet, in these three years I have taken all the most rigorous courses ever possible at my school (my school is somewhat competitive) – 12 APs and 5 honors courses. But here’s the thing – I have 6 Bs and 1 C. However, I feel I can justify my three of my grades. Since Bangladesh is pretty poor in its English curriculum, I feel I was way behind in English during sophomore year, getting 2 Bs. But I improved greatly junior year, getting the highest grades in my class both semesters. Now, I also have a C, which is in AP Microeconomics. I took this course online at flvs.net. I must add that my family is poor (18,000/year) and so I had little access to a computer at the library. When I finally bought a computer, I was way behind pace and I had to give up doing some assignments in order to meet the deadline. Hence the low grade. I assure you that my ecs are gonna shine, and I expect good recs and essays.

So, do you think there is a need for such an explanation, and if so how? Or do you think I am making lame excuses? Do you think adcoms will consider my situation? Please help, wise parents!

I have a different question: Why are you limiting yourself to the "Ivy leagues?" They are all quite different --- and there are also many other excellent schools that are not ivy league schools that would welcome your application. I hate to see someone limit themselves, especially to schools that are lottery tickets for even the best qualified applicants. I'm not saying you shouldn't, after carefully identifying WHICH ivy schools fit you best, take a shot at applying, but I hope you are focusing on other schools as well.

With that said, I think the most selective of the Ivy league schools are the least likely to care about any "excuses" when examining an applicants record. They receive thousands upon thousands of applications where no excuses or explanations are necessary, including, I am sure, many from other recent immigrants to the states. Again, please be sure to keep an open mind to other excellent choices available to you.

I'll second Carolyn's comments - look beyond a few schools where having the stats merely buys you a lottery ticket!

You mention your ECs will shine - a killer "hook" will be what you need to increase your chances at the most selective schools. Good luck!
