Does anyone have any info on the differences between these two programs, as far as access to research opportunities and time commitment for Honors programs after class?

They’re similar in a lot of ways. Both have lots of access to research. I’m not sure what you mean by time commitment… can you clarify?

the website mentions evening activities in the WISE program, but not in the honors college. I’m just trying to help D pick which one to list as first choice

Ah. There’s a pretty solid slate of activities in both programs, honestly. The major differences between the programs are the courses (HON seminars, which are core courses, vs WISE seminars, which are research/mentoring-based) and the academic focus (HON takes students in all majors, whereas WISE is obviously more specific). There’s no bad choice there as far as preferences go.

Also, could you tell me if there are minimum GPA’s to remain in the programs? I read a thread on the parents forum about how hard it can be for STEM students to maintain 3.5’s and 3.7’s

I believe the minimum for all programs is a 3.0. And ultimately, that’s on the student. Yes, some of the courses are hard here, but I understand that some of the curves can be generous as well. The thing to remember is that we want students to persist and graduate, and the honors programs are particularly keen on making sure their students do well!

Thanks. 3.0 seems reasonable.
