I was wondering what the key differences are between the Honrs College and the University Scholars Program.
I have been looking for answers on the web, but have yet to find an adequate information source.
I am looking to major in Computer Science or perhaps Economics (id actually prefer econ, but ive heard the dept isnt as strong as comp scie…sooo) , with a minor in Math. If I may also add, I’m not too fond with very personal seminars, which is my main reason for asking this question. I will also be living on campus.
Thank you in advance for any answers or comments, or if more information would be required for you to help me.
Hey @ggwpafk823,
Did you find out the difference? I was initially accepted into University Scholars, but have recently been accepted into Honors College as well. So I’m really curious. Also, do you know if a student can be in both programs?
no, i haven’t found out much…
although I could certainly convey what little i do know…
Honors college
pros:
scholarship money (3k or 2k every year)
you get to/ have to dorm with other honors kids (with the smartest kids on campus, presumably, at least on paper, anyways)
the dorm, i forget which one, starts with an r, is one of the two newer ones, really beautiful
they get a building I think, not the entire dorm. Information tech science (ITS) undergrad college students live there as well
cons: (for me)
special seminars or something (extra seminars…)
a “special status” of sorts… although I have no idea how the rest of the sbu population perceives honours kids, after what I’ve been through at my highschool, id rather just melt into the background a bit more in college and “do my thing”
university schoalrs (which I was offered, I wasnt offerd a place at the honors college)
pros:
more generic, larger population, no “attention” ( i really dont want to be singled out/known as a smart kid in college)
you get to pick the dorm (although could be mistaken, I think honors college kids have to live in the specified dorm)
Honors college have special seminars but they dont have to do Stony Brook’s regular ones. So its actually just replaced. So no, not necessarily more seminars. And we stay in Tabler. Roth is the new and nice one apparently. And that’s where the Science Undergrad College students live. I think Uni Scholars is a great program too. Both get priority registration for classes. There are about 60 HC students a year and 200+ Uni scholars.
