I’m a chemistry major attending UCSC and am currently considering dropping Math 100/ Intro to Proofs and Problem Solving. I was considering a math minor, but am realizing that math isn’t as engaging for me as chemistry is. I have been doing well in the class, got an A on my first math proof paper, but just bombed an exam that we had last week. I’m now feeling overwhelmed with this class as I am also taking Chem 108B (second quarter of organic chemistry) with the lab, and Physics 6B (optics, fluids, thermodynamics) with the lab. I am excelling in all four of these classes and expect to get A’s in all of them, but my confidence to do well in the math class has taken a serious hit since the exam and I talked with my counselor about withdrawing. I know the general consensus for W’s is that one or two are not a huge deal but any more tend to be red flags. I have two W’s from winter quarter of my freshman year; the quarter before I ended up withdrawing from the university for personal reasons, and since my return two years later I managed to have two straight years (6 quarters + 1 summer session) of straight A’s, save for two B’s. I am wondering if withdrawing from this math class will reflect poorly on my transcript as I am interested in applying to a masters program once I graduate, or if it will look reasonable based on my work load this quarter and the fact that this math class is not related to my major?
