So I was reading the WM website and i read that they give interviews the summer before you actually apply how does that work, and even tough im an international student ill be in Virginia over the summer (richmond to be exact) and i was wondering is it worth giving the interview, cause the website also says: those who dont give the interview are not disadvantaged at all. If so whats the point in giving the interview in the first place ?

I don’t see how it could hurt any. Since you will be in Richmond it would not be a big deal to swing down to the Williamsburg for an interview and tour. Should set you apart from the other international students applying since you visited the school. Good luck!

W&M Admissions always stresses trying to get to know the person, which is sometimes hard to do on paper. The interview, which is conducted by a rising senior, allows them to get another perspective to understand you rather than just the application. That is the reason W&M has an open ended question on the application - it allows you to express yourself in order for them to be more familiar with you.

So if you do it, great! It may help them understand you in a way they couldn’t before. If you don’t, well they don’t hold it against you (it is certainly not expected) and your essays and the open ended question will hopefully be enough for them to know you.

At least, that’s my perspective on it.

thank you guys, now I think ill do it. Cause im pretty sure im going to Busch Gardens in any case, so why not :P

Word to the Wise: Get the interview scheduled as soon as possible! They fill up ridiculously fast! As a matter of fact, the date you want may already be filled. We tried last summer and by the time we got around to it, there was not one appointment left (this was early summer).

On a positive note, they really didn’t hold it against her. She got in anyway!

thanks for the advice :)

Last question (a stupid one at that): When the website says students can sign up for interviews as of May 1, 2010. Does that mean I have to sign up before 1st may or after?

After. I signed up for mine on the 2nd last year.

You can sign up for an interview beginning May 1 by visiting
[William & Mary - Summer Interviews](http://www.wm.edu/admission/interview) Dates do fill quickly but certainly not in the first few days of registration.

The interview is informative and evaluative and is designed to be a 20-minute conversation between you and the W&M Senior Interviewer (a current W&M rising senior). If you’re someone who is comfortable talking about yourself with someone you’ve never met for 20 minutes than the interview is a great way to showcase your personality to the Admission Committee and also to ask of a current student any questions you have about W&M.

what would one wear for this interview?

Wear something casual but neat…no cut-off shorts and ratty jeans. When I did the interview I wore a skirt and blouse with sandals. Neat slacks and a top for girls would be fine. If I remember correctly the students who do the interviews are dressed neatly but not in business attire.

Interviews are casual. We recognize that many students who interview will also take a tour and Williamsburg summers are far from balmy so casual dress for the interview is fine.
