I'm not sure if I should do the summer interview or not. I've already signed up for it, but I'm worried that I'll mess up and end up ruining my chances of getting in.

However, I was wondering how much the interview could help my chances if it goes well? Would it be safer to just not do the interview, or should I just go for it?

The interview is designed to allow you to showcase your personality; to literally include your personality in your application. It’s designed to help you but of course, should you provide only one word answers or fail to showcase your personality you could do yourself a disservice. We recommend that if you feel you can talk about yourself for 25 minutes with someone you’ve never met (keeping in mind that your interviewer is a W&M senior and not a dean so they’re close in age to you) then go for it. You should do just fine. If you’re someone who’s not comfortable with new people or not comfortable talking about yourself it may not be in your wheelhouse. If you’re yourself you’ll do fine.

You can check out one of our recent Admit It! blogs on our interviews and how to prepare ([W&M Blogs The Inside Scoop on Interviewing](http://blogs.wm.edu/2011/06/01/the-inside-scoop-on-interviewing/)).

If you decide not to keep your interview, please email Dean Livingston (wcbegl@wm.edu) immediately. Our interview appointments are all booked and we have a waiting list hundreds of people long and want to be able to provide any canceled appointments to someone else.

I know it’s beastly hot in Williamsburg this time of year, but am I right in assuming slacks and a nice shirt is still the appropriate attire for a summer interview? (Also assuming the offices are air conditioned!)

My D wore shorts (of an appropriate length) and a polo shirt; for shoes, she wore sandals. It was about 100 degrees that day.

We saw several people changing clothes in the bathroom of the admissions reception area, too.

I did not see any young men wearing ties or jackets, but we did see some young ladies wearing nice sundresses.

I think you would be fine in a polo shirt and khaki shorts; remember, you will be walking during the tour, after or before your interview, and it is hot outside. And humid.

We have no expectations or dress code for interviews. We recognize that many who are interviewing are also taking the campus tour and therefore wish to dress comfortably and that’s fine by us. No need to change between the tour and the interview either unless the student will feel more comfortable wearing nicer clothes for the interview. Again however, we do not expect students to dress any certain way for the interviews and casual dress is just fine.
