how many female undergraduates are majoring in computer science at Yale?
how about for physics and chemistry?
thanks!

There are currently 6 (out of 30 total), counting the comp sci+psych, comp sci+electrical engineering, and comp sci+math interdisciplinary majors

In physics: 17 (out of 55), counting the physics+philosophy, math+physics, and astronomy+physics interdisciplinary majors

In chemistry: 17 (out of 33)

Keep in mind that those numbers are only for declared majors... and you don't declare a major until the end of your sophomore year. There's a larger number of majors + prospective majors in each of those areas, probably with a proportionally larger/similar percentage of females.

theres 30 comp sci majors in the whole school?! no way
thanks for the heads up kwijiborjt, does anyone know how many female undergrads are in a nonrequired compsci class (on average)?

You might do well to contact the DUS (Director of Undergraduate Studies) for the departments you're interested in. Unless there's someone on the board who's taken a lot of compsci/physics/chem classes, you're probably not going to get much useful information.

In general though, these are departments where females are underrepresented... which i'm guessing is why you asked. Still, i don't think there's any dept that's absolutely dominated by males, even if it's 20% v. 80% for declared compsci majors.

In pre-med chem classes (orgo + gen chem), you're probably going to get at least as many if not more females than males... In my experience there are more female pre-meds than male pre-meds.

And it's worth noting... just because females are underrepresented in these areas at yale (as i'd guess they are nearly everywhere), that doesn't mean that the females who are chem/physics/compsci majors aren't at the top of the class. I've only taken chemistry classes at yale, but all of the best chemistry students i know are female.

During Bulldogs days in April, I chatted with people at the CS table (since D1, an incoming freshman is interested in EECS/CS). I asked questions about how many people graduate with degree in EECS per year and learned that there were total 19 of Yale class 2008 at that time would graduate with CS degree, among them 3 with EECS. Among 19 graduating seniors majoring in CS, there is one female student.
I was told there were 5 or 6 females declared CS major in their sophomore year but changed their minds later on. It all depends on what is your long term career plan.

What's the CS department like? Are the CS majors pretty happy with their courses?
