Knowing that UNC has one of the strongest women's soccer programs in the nation, I was wondering about the club soccer team. How difficult is it to make the team? My daughter loves soccer, played varsity and competitive in high school. Our region is one of the strongest in the nation for club soccer and in this environment, she was simply average. Is there any chance of a non-ODP level player making club soccer at UNC? Or should she just stick with intramurals?

My suitemate sounds similar to your daughter--played varsity soccer at a competitive high school. She really wanted to play club soccer at Carolina and was pretty upset when she didn't make it. She played intramurals, though, and had a good time. She also was involved with club cross country. Carolina obviously has some really high standards when it comes to soccer, so even club is really, really competitive because a lot of people here played in high school. Your daughter should definitely try out, but if she doesn't make it intramurals could be a great fit :)

Yeah. Not one of the best women's soccer programs, EASILY the best. From what I hear, club is verrry hard, but that just means that intramurals are that much better.

yeah, you know Mia Hamm?
I was her coach.
Now she's a legend.

Thanks, guys, I had a feeling that the club team would be really really difficult to make. Sounds like intramurals will be her best bet. I'll tell her to check out the club games anyhow and make a determination if she'd be even remotely in the running for sophomore year.

Thanks again for your help.

"Yeah. Not one of the best women's soccer programs, EASILY the best."

As they again proved this weekend. ND has 7 players from my area on the team, so I think many soccer fans here were banking on a ND win. Congrats to the girls.

Yes, UNC is nearly impossible to play for. I mean go for it, try out if she'd like, but to be on the squad you have to be a top top player. (Playing in that region is helpful, but she would still have to be some of the best of that region).

They consistently have players on the national team, and around the time Hamm was playing had 6, I believe, on the national team that won the Olympics. 19 NCAA Championships is a pretty hefty number.

I know I'll play intramurals if I go, but definitely not club haha.

Just adding in here (now that it's too late) that UNC's intramural soccer system is incredible. I had no idea.

2,000 students this year played IM. There are people whose jobs are to just coordinate the events! Within IM, there are several leagues, too. Another reason why I love this machine of a school.
