Does anyone know anything about Betsy Barbour/Helen Newberry? Considering trying to do womens' housing next year (I'll be a freshman) because of the great location. If anyone knows about or has lived in these dorms, I'd love to hear about them. I'm also considering applying for a MLC- the Community Scholars Program- which would be housed in East Quad. I'd rather not have the requirements associated with it, though. If I put that I prefer womens' only housing on my apps, am I basically guaranteed one of the two?

If you choose to live in the women’s housing, I’m fairly sure you’re almost guaranteed to get a spot. I know they are quite nice, nicer than most of the freshman dorms, though I don’t know anything about the dining halls.

I think you are likely to get the women’s dorm if you sign up for it. The dining is limited and during certain times you will need to go to West Quad for meals - you can research the dining hall schedule. There is no dining hall at Newberry. There is no breakfast, no Friday dinner and no weekend meals at Barbour. I don’t think they are any nicer than the other dorms but the location is really good. Some people like them and other’s do not.

My sister lives there (Betsy) currently and loves it; everyone’s really nice and easy to get along with. Newberry is right next door which means both dormitories share the same dining hall; although, as res ipsa has pointed out, it is open only at certain days/hours. According to my sis, it’s not that big of a deal–what with classes elsewhere and eating out. AND THE LOCATION IS INCREDIBLE.

And yes, for the most part many peeps don’t prefer all-female housing, so it’s easier to get assigned a room there.

Good luck! Hope to see you there next year! (also a freshie wanting to live in Betsy) :)

Don’t forget Martha Cook, with its own tennis court. Also a great location, south side of South University, across from President’s house.

Yes!!! Martha Cook is a great choice…my daughter will be living there next year her sophomore year! Great location and once you’re in you won’t have to go through the lottery for housing because you are guaranteed a spot as long as you want to stay there. It is a little higher cost then the regular dorms…but I think it’s worth it.
