Should I take the SAT sophomore year?

Do you have the $ ? No fee waivers for 10th grade
Do you know what to expect ?
Have you taken any prep courses ?
Have you taken the PSAT ?

If you answered no to any of the questions above, don’t take the SAT.

Focus on the PSAT instead.
You’ll still have 1.5 years to take it after 10th grade.

my answer to the four questions is yes, and i took the psat earlier in 10th grade without any prep and got a 193. so i thought i might be able to score a 2000+ with some review and practice.

You may get 2000+ this year, however, I would not recommend taking it in 10th grade. Most sophomore students would not prepare before taking PSAT. Only the 11th grade PSAT score is important and you will need to take the SAT after the PSAT in case you make it above the semifinalist cutoff anyway. Your sophomore PSAT score is fine and you may be able to go over the cutoff in junior year depending on which state you are in. After all, you don’t want to take the test too many times as it will have an adverse effect on your applications. I would suggest to take the test after you are thoroughly prepared.

My case isn’t a normal one, but when I took the PSAT this year as a junior (didn’t take it sophomore year) without preparing I got a 224, and with very little subsequent preparation I got a 2400 on the most recent March SAT. And though I only took the PSAT once, I took the SAT previously in June of sophomore year (2320, without any sort of preparation/practice) and I thought having taken it once in sophomore year to familiarize myself with the mental demands and such of the SAT was a good decision on my part. However, my case isn’t exactly typical; getting a 2300+ on your first try without any preparation isn’t the norm. Based on my OWN experience, I was really glad I took it in sophomore year because just having been familiar with the test helped me perform better when I took it as a junior. @billcsho makes some good points too. It’s really up to you based on your opinion of your own abilities.

Take it and cancel it. You’d do better in junior year, and it would be a good experience.

^ oh hey that’s a good idea! do that.

No, because some colleges will see all of your scores. Instead, you should study for the sat by following xiggis method and silver turtles methods over the summer, then take the sat during jr yr either sept, oct or nov, and take PSAT in oct. and then you are done. Take practice tests in cb blue book under timed, test conditions and score yourself. Take a full test every 1 to 3 weeks over the summer with studying in between. Then you will know your scores without having the colleges see your scores.

Btw, d got 222 on 10th grade PSAT, so we followed the plan above. Definitely not worth it to take sat in 10th grade.
