I'm actually pulling for her to go to Wooster.....we really had a good feel for it when we visited last August, plus she has a cousin at Akron (they live in Cleveland), so she wouldn't be without family ties. The cold, well, she knows she's going to have to deal with that and it will be a very different cold from what we have where we live (damp, lots of fog, sometimes frost).

You're in the same situation we were last year. My husband and I were pulling for our daughter to choose Wooster, not only because of the great merit money, but because we had such a wonderful feel for the place. We let her make her own decision and, thankfully, she opted for Wooster. As a freshman this year, she's had absolutely no reason to regret her choice. It's been an amazing experience for her so far. ... I admire your daughter's adventuresome nature, to consider schools across country from her home. My younger daughter (also a senior in high school) has applied to colleges from California to New York--but NOTHING in Kentucky or anywhere in the South. Been there, done that, I guess. ... By the way, San Francisco is the best city in the world--as if you didn't already know that. I grew up in Southern California, but spent a fair amount of time in the Bay Area. I have an Aunt who has lived in a high-rise (rent controlled!) building overlooking the Bay Bridge for the past 40-some years.

mstee - we went during the summer, which was not the ideal time since there were not a lot of students around, but it's really the only time we were able to go. We were really impressed by the Independent Study program and the fact that you have to write the equivalent of a thesis your senior year. We didn't explore the town too much since we were on a pretty tight driving schedule, but we found our lodging (Hilton Garden Inn) fantastic....a fairly new property with reasonable rates and a short drive to campus. We flew into Cleveland (Southwest had a pretty good fare) and hit Oberlin, Wooster and Kenyon. D loved the cornfields! And I was surprised how green everything was in August....I was expecting yellow or something.

Hindoo - I have a love/hate thing with SF.....I'm pretty much stuck here for economic reasons but DH and I will probably leave the state sometime after the kiddies are done w/ college. Frankly I encourage both my kiddies to go out of state since they've pretty much ruled out the UCs due to size (and everyone in the universe applies to them) and I just think it's a good thing to be out of California for awhile. We in the Bay Area especially tend to live in a little bubble. :)

Tks for the information, Erin's Mom, it gives me something to start with. I am not familiar at all with Ohio, I've never been there. I have a friend that I haven't seen for many years that lives in Akron. Is that anywhere near?

Erin's Mom, I kind of feel the same way about the Bay Area. This is a great area, but so many people I know seem to think California is the be all end all. And I think this is such a big country with so many possibilities. But I'm not a native (can you tell?) My husband though, thinks he loves it here. Not sure if he really loves it that much, but he has a good job and doesn't like change . . .

Last year we visited Wooster on the day the IS papers were due. This was the first day after spring break in March. Watching the IS parade my daughter decided there was no other place she wanted to go to college. Last week my D was invited to the Wooster Alumni lunch in our area. The President of Wooster was the speaker. My D was asked to play the bagpipes for them. While they were enjoying Florida weather Wooster was shut down due to all the snow. All the colleges seem do their fund raising swings through our area in February!

Erin'sMom--As much as I've loved visiting the San Francisco area over the years, I can appreciate that it might be far different for those actually living there.

Anything anyone else can add about Wooster -- what you all have posted so far makes it sound like a pretty amazing place, a school that may be very well suited to my daughter.

I haven't read everything -- maybe someone covered this, but just have to ask, how's the food there?

On re-reading this thread I see that someone mentioned that Akron is close by. It looks like it may be time to visit my friend!

We live in Akron. It takes us about a 1/2 hr to get there, on mainly non-four lane highway.

You should also check into flying into the Akron-Canton airport which is closer if you have access to AirTran or Frontier airlines. They are based in northeast OH out of that airport, fares are fairly low, and its a quicker trip to Wooster.

dabronxette--Your son was probably used to good food at home. I'm the world's worst cook, so whatever slop they offer at Wooster, it must be great by comparison!

OldinJersey--Congratulations to your daughter! She SHOULD be excited--Wooster's a wonderful school, whether one loves the food or hates it. I hope she likes what she sees on her April visit.

i'm planning to visit wooster in april also. i want to visit the chinese & business professors. anyone know when i can create my own major? i'm thinking about global health--the understanding of the economic, political, social, and cultural factors that influence health outcomes.

I'm currently a high school senior and I've been accepted to Wooster!!! Wahooo!!!! Also, thanks to my lovely admissions officer Cathy Finks, I won the Arthur Holly Compton Holly scholarship for a play that I wrote. I didn't even know about the scholarship!! I just sent in my play to enhance my app and, a week later, Ms. Finks called to say that she had entered it in the Holly scholarship competition!!

This only affirms my view that Wooster is an absolutely amazing school. Where else would an admissions officer just think to enter something you sent in into the running for a scholarship?

I absolutely love Wooo and my mother does too (my dad hasn't visited with me yet--admitted students weekend!!) We visited during late fall on a visit day and she was incredibly impressed at the programs planned for the parents--cocktails at the president's house on sunday night and breakfast with professors sunday morning!!

I'm still waiting to hear from my other schools but I'm pretty sure that I'll be a Fighting Scot next year. I absolutely love the school and the people. Oh, and the bagpiper/football players rushing the field before every game may be the sweeeetest tradition EVER.

I'm from the Metropolitan DC area. Anyone else???

I got accepted to Wooster a few months ago! With a $16,000 a year academic scholarship, which puts it pretty high up there on my list.

I've visited the campus twice, and I really like it there. It's very comfortable. The squirrels are black! Not that this is a deciding factor for me or anything, but it's worth noting.
