<p>The Word Count function gives the corrent number (includes every word).</p>
<p>The English language considers words such as a, an, the, is, in, etc. to be actual words and so do colleges when they set their word limits.</p>
<p>fwiw:</p>
<p>the UC's have a word counter in the online essay....it even counts a contraction as TWO words. :D</p>
