Word Limit

Hi all!

So one of my essays is slightly over the limit. This might just be paranoia, but I feel like I read somewhere that MIT got stricter and would NOT let anything over 250 be submitted. I COULD shorten my essay, but you know, it would be nice not to :p. Ten words never hurt anybody, right? Actually they probably did. But that's besides the point. Anyways, is there a hard or soft word limit? Thanks!

trust the word limiter and check your pdf preview. the pdf preview is identical to what we see.

Chris, last year I found that when I previewed my essays they shrunk down to fit no matter how many words above the limit I went. However, when I tried to submit it wouldn’t validate. That is a nightmare to someone who tries to submit very close to the deadline. Slashing words under timed pressure is no fun! I found that up to 25 words above the limit was still accepted.

yep. that’s because it’s not really a word counter but a character counter which uses some expected average of characters to constitute words.

i suggest staying under the word count and not procrastinating ;)

Hi Chris,
What is the word limit for the optional information section? Thanks.

that’s…an excellent question. why don’t you find out and let me know?
