WordSmart, does it worth spend time to memorize??

Hello. how are you guys doing?
well.. I am a sophomore in high school and i am going to take ACT on december. I would like to take SAT too, however, I know my problem is Critical Reading part. (Esp. Sentence Completion)
When I look at Critical Reading part, I have no idea about the answer choices (Btw, I am foreign student and I moved to America last year).

So, do you guys think should I memorize the word lists in WordSmart??
(If then, would it be smart to memorize from A-Z or use some other methods(?)) I tried making flashcards, I made it till D but I gave up. Tell me ur opinions, please.

Thanks a lot

Is there a particular reason that you are taking them this year? as a sophomore?

WordSmart is an excellent resource for vocabulary. It helped me a lot. Wordsmart I is good enough. Remember to memorize all the SAT and GRE hit parade at the back.

xatuuatx)) Oh I just want to see where I am at right now.
iAppler)) Thanks for information.

Well, sophomore year usually has more time than your junior/senior years of highschool, doesn't it? hahahaha.. I HATE MEMORIZING WORDS AND DEFINITIONS!

^ Yeah, it's a good idea to take it in 9th or 10th grade just to find a starting point. I took it as a freshman primarily to see if I'd qualify for Duke TIP, but it also served to show me where I was at.

I tried WordSmart. It's a scam, trust me. Just get the Barron's high-frequency list and maybe a few others.

Ohh ok, I'm a sophomore too, and I'm doing practice tests. I don't really want a real SAT on my "rec" yet.

There are only like 10 sentence completions on the SAT, so I'd say it is not really worth studying that much for. It may be good to study anyway to improve your everyday vocabulary, but don't do it for the sole reason of acing the SATs.

@thekristin1129: there are approximately 20, which means sentence completions are worth about 200 points: not the most important part of the test, but nothing to sneeze at either. :)
@OP: Word Smart I is very good.

I have Word Smart too, and it's very, very good. Making flashcards can be a pain, but you'll definitely remember the words better that way. There's a rule of three: to learn and retain new info, you need to be exposed to it three times. "Interacting" with new words, like by writing flashcards, is a great way to learn them.

Are you talking about PR’s WordSmart or WordSmart’s WordSmart?

I have WordSmart grade school excellence and it’s so far so good (they included SAT/Reading Comp)… I just think 200 dollars is a bit pricey… :(

I like the style but I have 1 Barron’s vocab and 1 no fear vocab book (plus one more I’m buying from my Eng class)… should I spend 200 dollars more out of my college fund?

This thread was nearly two years old! Just get Direct Hits Vol I & II - together they cost like $25.

I know spratleyj, you’ll be amazed at the things you find when you type them onto google search. Anyway, have you or your friends used the books? I have two (and three) vocab books already so I just want to be really careful about spending more money. I hope you understand.

I meant to say: (and three in a week*)

Right now Direct Hits is giving free copies to people who review them! :)

Oh, I can’t find the official site, but I’m returning WordSmart by WordSmart for sure. I’ll just use my vocab books and the dictionary if necessary.

all you need is direct hits, minz
the rest are just way too much
