Work load/average number of hours for students at the UMD Robert H. Smith Business School

I am trying to get an estimate of the work load/average number of hours for a 15 credit workload. I know their are a lot of factors but I understand students will spend about 15 hours in class. How much additional study and homework time does the typical student spend?

It really just depends on the classes and how easily the student grasps the concepts. There’s no way for us to estimate. Students’ abilities to handle a college workload vary greatly.

If you are asking if that is too much or not enough because it’s only 5 classes in college compared to the 8 classes high school students can take…? It’s very different.

15 credits is typical, but 12 credits is also considered full-time and can also be a lot of work if the classes are intense. I would not recommend more than 16 credits for first semester freshmen (the one credit class seminars are not stressful, so ok as a sixth class).
