I signed up for work study and already submitted my FASFA for the upcoming school year, but is it necessary that I do workstudy if the college I’m attending will meet 100% of need? I’ve received a tentative financial aid package back in December because I filled out my CSS profile early for the ED deadline. I would receive $750 in Federal Perkins Loan Est., $1250 Fed Direct Subsidized Loans, $1,250 in Work Study, and 21k in a grant per semester. Would opting to not do work study increase loans or increase in grant?
Your grant aid will not be increased if you choose not to do work study. You’ll have to come up with other money to replace work study dollars if you decline work study.
Do the work study. It’s good to have a job history on your resume. These jobs tend to be pretty flexible. It will give you some money of your own…that you earned.
If you decline work/study you could probably draw more on the Direct Stafford Loan but I don’t understand why you would want that.
WS is financial aid. The school is USING work study to meet 100% of need.
Why do you want to get rid of WS? You should take the WS…valuable experience to put on a resume. Plus it gives you spending money for day to day expenses.
What would you do for “pocket money” if you didn’t do the WS??? Would you rather be at school and have NO spending money?
If you are concerned about dividing your attention between work and school, studies have shown that students with campus jobs do better than those who don’t, perhaps because they are more attentive to keeping their study schedules.
I think WS is a great job opportunity. And since they are mostly on campus jobs, the kids I know (including one of mine) that had one had very flexible work schedules. Their supervisors worked with them around exams and mid-terms - probably better than an off campus job would. For most jobs there’s less expectation that you’ll work over breaks, etc which is also nice.
