Work Study/off campus employment

How easy is it to get work study positions or independent employment in Bethlehem? Is work study usually a big part of financial aid?
Thanks!

My son didn’t do work study. But, he did get a job with one of the departments at Lehigh for a year. Then he moved on and had research assistant positions with different professors. He really enjoyed them all. One of them probably gave him the experience to get a fantastic summer internship and a job offer for when he graduates this spring.

He found the job from a brother in his fraternity. The research positions he got by just talking to the professors during office hours. We have found Lehigh to be a very friendly place. People there go out of there way to help you if you just take the time to ask them!

Good luck! I am sure you will have some great work experiences while at Lehigh.

Thanks a bunch!

It is fairly easy to get work study employment at Lehigh. I didn’t do it my freshman year, but I know there was a fairly big work study fair early in first semester. There are representatives from all of the departments and offerings where you can ask questions and fill out applications. I’m not aware of anyone who needed work study not finding a position they were happy about.

You need to receive Work Study as a part of your federal aid package to be eligible for a position… If you get Work study through that and accept it then you are guaranteed a position somewhere on campus, as long as you go and look for one (Like Starspy said, there is a huge work study fair early in the semester to find a position). You can get positions all over campus in places like the libraries, the gym, Zoellner, and different offices and departments.

I think off-campus employment is very rare, especially for freshmen because they aren’t allowed to have cars on campus.

You can only do work study positions if it is part of your financial aid. If you do not get work study there are still work options.
You can join a group called Lehigh Liners. I believe they call alumni and “friends of Lehigh” asking for monetary contributions. Another option would be to work at a coffee shop or store off campus. I know at the new coffee shop, Saxbys, they hired a few Lehigh students to work.

Another option for those who do not get awarded work study as a result of fianancial need is the area of academic support. My son has been employed as a tour guide, tutor and this year as a TA for the Integrated product Design course. There are obviously academic requirements for these jobs.

There are soooo many work study options here. I dont know anyone who tried and didn’t. I have friends who tutor in elementary schools around town… friends who work in the library, work at the rock wall in the gym, and I personally blog on the Lehigh Engineers blog. I get to post about my days and experiences here at Lehigh. and the best part is most work studies are not rigorous (AKA work a little and do a little homework)
The blogs I do are here: http://luengineer.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/</a> (also good for prospective students to look at, as we talk about our times here)
