Work Study Q(s)

Where does the work study money go?
Do you receive a paycheck and deposit it to your personal bank account or does it go directly to your BruinDirect acct?
Could you possibly use your pay for personal expenses instead of your tuition?
What happens if you decline workstudy on your eFAN?
Does your loan rate grow as a result?

"The federal govt pays a portion of a student's wages and the employer pays the balance"
Does this mean the federal govt pays the employer a sum and then the employer pays the rest?

if anyone can answer any one of these questions, it would put my mind at ease. Thanks

Well here are some of the answers.

Yeah, the employer and government split the cost of your salary. It's basically an incentive for the employers to hire students with work study.

all of it to you as long as you work enough hours to earn all of it.

you can choose to receive it as a personal check. however, most people have the paycheck directly transfer into your personal bank account. you will have to give them a voided check so they can do this. it's the same as any other job.

yes, they dont care what you do with the money. they just assume you need it for school-related expenses. besides, you would've already paid your fall tuition before you start your work-study job anyway. might be good to use the money to pay for your loans or books though.

then you won't get the workstudy. not sure if they make you pay the difference out-of-pocket or replace it with some other type of loan though. i think that depends on what they've already offered you, so it's a case-by-case basis.

if you can afford to not work, then dont work. if you had to choose between workstudy or receiving another loan instead, i'd choose workstudy cuz u get the money now and dont have to repay anything later (like for loans), but that's just personal preference (some people might not like working while in school).

for example, your salary is $10/hr. the federal govt provides $5 of that and the employer pays the other $5. you get all of the $10 though.
