work study question

If a school offers $$ in work study, does that mean the student can earn up to but not more than the amount offered? I have sent so many questions already to Fin Aid officer that I am hoping not to have to add this one, too.

The work study amount is the maximum amount you can earn through work study. However, if you want to earn more, it may be possible to do so by:

negotiating for more work study hours/money time when you begin to bump up against the maximum;

if the department you work for has a separate, non work study budget, it's possible they could pay you for more hours with their own budgeted funds;

you can work at a non work study job.

You can also convert a portion of the loans offered to work study, assuming you can fit in that much work, I have yet to see my D get more than $2000-$2500 in a year, between breaks & taking finals weeks off, etc

^^^^^ And also the other way around (as long as you have not already got the maximum subsidized loans). My daughter gets offered $3400 in WS every year (well all two so far) and we converted part to loans last year and plan the same this year as it is almost impossible to earn that.
