Work Study

I have a decent amount of work study. Where can I get jobs to use. Can i get ones within my major?

You can get work study jobs anywhere. Work in food places, working in the ticket office, work in the libraries, work in the gym. Most departments also have students work in their office. You can work tons of places on campus, just look around the week you arrive for openings.

Most schools post forms/procedures and open jobs on a site for all students to access. You can call the student employment office.

At the beginning of the semester there will be a job fair on campus, where everyone on campus will come to advertise the jobs that are available for students (mostly work-study jobs). There will be huge variety, from jobs in the Atheletic Dept, to most academic departments. I was able to get one in the School of Education my freshman year, and now, after four semesters, I am still working here (with raises each year!).

There is a good chance that you will be able to find a job in some department of your major (but remember that there are probably a few other students applying for the same job), but there is a chance your major does not offer any related jobs. If you don't see anything relating to your major at the job fair, you can go into the department, and ask.

Are jobs only offered in the begining of the semester. And how flexible are they?? if I only want to work 5 to 10 hrs a week would that work?

Whats Min wage in Cali?

You can find jobs at any time. Just look for fliers around campus or in the Daily Trojan. How flexible the work is all depends on where you get your job. Most will be aware that you are a student and don't have time for long hours. Some places will require more of the workplace giving you a schedule (modeled around when you can work) and you should stick to it. These are more of the jobs at important places: libraries, bookstore, Lyon Center, etc. My job, however, is in a little office, and therefore I can easily switch my hours around if I have a conflict pop up, and I don't need to find a replacement.

What is minimum wage.... Is it still $6.75? Or maybe it's $7.50 now. I'm not sure.

Ok its like 7:35 in OR

Minimum wage is $6.75/hr in CA. We're not crazy hippies like those $7.35/hr toting Oregonians.

...

jk

the campus tour guide said that most jobs on campus pay above minimum wage. she also said that working in the restaurant next to the bookstore was a great idea because people give really good tips at the end of the semester when they haven't used up their meal plan.

this is true...most jobs pay between 7 and 9 an hour...and yes, the thing about end of semester tips at upstairs commons is true as well.

I plan on transfering in a year and I am probably gonna try to a find some work study job, my main concern is having the saturdays off during USC Football season, I cant miss the games, too much excitement to be missing especially at this time when we are at the top

If you find work at mainstream type places like the bookstore, then you might have to work Saturdays. But if you find work at offices on campus or something (like I work at the School of Education), everything closes on the weekend, just like classes and normal jobs, so you wouldn't have to work on Saturdays.
