I didn't receive an offer for the work study program (I just got my fin aid package today). Anyway, I am still interested in working since SC is crazy expensive. How hard is it to get a job on/near campus even without workstudy, because I think they get priority hiring...?

During welcome week there is a job fair where there is a list of all non work-study jobs available. While it isn't as extensive as the work-study list, there's quite a few options. Plenty of jobs at the libraries are for non work-study. I work with USC Readers Plus and we usually have funds to hire non work-study. One of my friends works at Starbucks (which is right off-campus) so you can see if their hiring.

Basically, if you look around, you should be able to find a job...it just might be slightly harder than for work-study.

Would non-work-study jobs be as flexible with hours for school work, etc?

Usually employers are pretty flexible with school. A lot of the offices are 9-5 so you'd have to schedule hours for around that. And during finals weeks, there's usually different schedules so you can plan around finals (or in my case, we don't work during finals). My roommate works at the bookstore and she works only occasionally on Fridays (whenever she's not away for the weekend) and her boss is okay with that.
