Work/Study

Hey,
Could someone please explain work/study to me? My EFC is 0 and under my financial aid award package, $2500 is work/study. Do i work for money and spend it on myself or does it help pay for my tuition? Do i work on campus? How would I go about finding a job? Am I guaranteed a job? When do I start looking for the job? Thank you so much.

you still have to work to get the money; no you’re not guaranteed a job. You have to look for one. You can use the money on whatever you want, so it’s basically no diff from earnings from a regular job. However, certain jobs are funded by grants, so you’re only able to work only if you have workstudy. For other jobs, you can decide to use workstudy or not.

I’m sorry, but what do you mean when you say you can decide to use work/study or not? What’s the difference? Either way, the money you earn is your spending money correct?

yeah, it’s basically having a job. It only makes a difference when the place u’re applying only allow students w/ workstudy. If there’s a place(like the dining hall) that hires people w/o workstudy, and if you choose to work there, you have the option to use your workstudy award or let the university pay u.

Thank you!!!

Work study jobs are easier than regular jobs, and let you “study” while you “work”, right?

hope you’re kidding^

Nope, I don’t see how my post sounded at all like I was kidding…I thought the point of work-study was to provide an easier jobs related to school to help low income students pay for college?

@yosup, you’re still working. You might work two to nine hours a week, but you still have time to “study.” Some jobs might be easier than others (Ex: Tutoring is easier than being a lab assistant, but you’d better not slack off). How should I put it…you’re working towards your award each semester.

Say you received $2000 from Work Study (1000 per semester). You’re trying to work towards that $1000 if you really need it, and you can’t exceed your work study amount.

@yosup, I thought you meant a completely different thing my bad hahaha
