Hi,
I’m moving to a new town far away from home, pursuing a tough EE degree. I kind of want to apply for this job position at my university, but I’m hesitant because I don’t want to jump right into working, living on my own, and taking tough courses all at once. I might feel overwhelmed. What should I do? Should I get a job my freshman year? Or wait until I get a feel for everything?
My recommendation to my mechE son was to not work freshman year. He has a job lined up going into sophomore year, but I’m glad he had the opportunity to take freshman year to adjust to the very different demands of college life and being away from home and also explore how the different work opportunities would fit into his schedule. My thought is if you can afford to wait at least a semester to get a job you should do so. Not every student has that luxury.
