Here in the eastern time zone, for the next two plus weeks we get 4 games each day: 5am, 8am, 11am, and 2pm. Marquee teams get the 2pm time slot it seems. Bring it on!!
USA just scored against Wales at 36’. 1-0
I think the US team is looking pretty good. Better than I’ve ever seen them, anyway.
Agreed never seen them look so fluid and under control. Oddly only negative seems in my opinion to be off set piece opportunities as they seem a bit tight.
Amazing hearing the drum beat USA chant. Great stuff!!
They look organized and competent.
When did Alexi Lalas get old (like me)?
US looking good so far.
Spoke to soon. Suddenly under pressure and chasing.
Lucky we did not lose today.
Young teams need a good coach and it was right of Dempsey to call out his former teammate for not making the right adjustments in the second half.
Game changed when Musah came out. As I said, too many mediocre MLS players and Haji Wright…ooof!
Hopefully, no one got hurt.
We live to fight another day.
We have DirecTV at work, and Fox is not available – so I followed off-and-on using the ESPN app. Didn’t see a single minute of the game.
According to the stats, we had most of the possession and about an equal number of shots/chances. Wales is a decent side – so not a bad outcome to get a point out of it.
Seeing England dismantle Iran today… we must beat Iran, because it’s likely Wales will. Something tells me both Wales and the USA will end up on 4 points, so goal differential will be important. (of course, beating England or even getting a point off them would be great…)
Second half was all Wales today.
I was bothered by the studio crew today–they were just too “woo hoo, USA, USA!” during halftime today. They used the word “we” to describe the US team way too much. This is a world event. There are millions in this country, either due to coming here from another country, or an affinity for the country of their ancestors, feel a greater connection to a team that isn’t the USA team. There are many, many internationals in the country watching the World Cup as well.
I also found it funny that Fox chose to emulate the set-up on the NBC Premier league coverage, having an English woman (Rebecca Lowe wannabee, I guess) be the lead person in the studio.
Shocker –
Saudi Arabia 2
Argentina 1
I didn’t see it, but that’s a stunner.
But way back in 1990, Argentina, with Diego Maradona, lost the opening game to Cameroon and ultimately went to the Finals IIRC.
Please thank him for his service.
Oliver Giroud is the most underrated striker of this generation.
This has been the standard studio setup for a while now. CBS/Paramount uses it for the Champions League, Fox used it during the Gold Cup and World Cup qualifying.
Kind of insulting to call Kate Abdo (assuming that is who you are talking about) a wannabe since she is fluent in French, German and Spanish and really good at what she does.
With all due respect, @jmnva06, please lighten up!! Do not mean to be insulting anybody. Aren’t you familiar with trash talking in sports? It’s a thing sports fan do. Am a big fan of the English Premier League, and find their coverage on NBC to be excellent. I am sure Kate Abdo is a wonderful and intelligent person, just having a bit of fun here!
And I am not trying to be condescending. I have no idea if you are an avid sports fan or a casual observer. Things like the World Cup, Super Bowl, etc., bring out all levels of enthusiasts.
I’m familiar with trash talk. Would you have called John Strong a Peter Drury wannabe?
EPL is great but only piece of the soccer I consume in a given week. I coach, play, watch in person (season tickets to MLS and NWSL) and watch on TV.
The World Cup is certainly the peak of soccer calendar and brings out the casual fans. I get and respect that. For me, it is just the next big set of games on the calendar. My personal goal is to watch at least some of every match.
Spain was scarily clinical. I sort of felt bad for Costa Rica (but not really since I’m not a fan of their goalie).
Now getting ready for Canada. I love that stat that only 1 of their players was alive the last time they were in the World Cup.
