I have a general question about US News Rankings compared with World Rankings. Basically, I'm thinking of attending Georgia Tech for next year, because of its high engineering rankings (6th). However, its overall ranking is 38th in the US, and 146th worldwide, whereas schools like Ann Arbor have a lower Engineering ranking, but higher world rankings. How should I perceive these differences, and based on that, what school should i attend?

Why choose a school based on ranking...go for the programs instead. No matter what rank a school is, it means nothing unless you get the full educational/social/etc/ experience.

But if you wish to keep continue choosing like this, I suggest you look at the major you wish to pursue. US News/World rankings usually are on a general/overall level. I.E. Harvard/Yale are considered the best undergrad, but I hear their engineering sucks ( do they even have engineering?)

they do...........

Umm are you SURE that Ann Arbor is "low" in engineering? I thought it was above GTech last year at least?

And with the general national university categories, you are comparing 38 to like, what, 25 at Ann Arbor? Do you honestly think that's a big difference? Go where you WANT to go, and if you must choose, choose it on specifics if you are sure of your major (like not just engineering but what TYPE of engineering) and if not, on more general categories.

Do you plan to work in Zimbabwe after you graduate? I'm sure they examine world rankings very closely over there.

Alrite so I should go for GaTech (I really wanna go there, I like the climate/excitement of Atlanta). Thanks guys!

See, you've answered your own question. (That's a good thing)
