See, that’s how they get you. Wait until you’re distracted by the beautiful surroundings, and then…WHAM! The right tackle nails you.

Cincinnati? No way.

Cincinnati threw me, too. I was there last year, and it looked no better than any other urban, public university to me.

Too soaked with herbicides too.

I love a beautiful campus and am depressed by ugly ones. How often in life do you get to live in a truly beautiful place?

Thought the same thing (“Now THIS is college”) about p’ton campus when we were up there in June for son’s graduation. He was privileged to have spent 4 amazing years there, not just the campus itself but all the opportunities…more than I could have ever imagined. The gorgeous setting seemed the perfect backdrop for all he got to see and do.The academics go with out saying, but his friends will be treasured for a lifetime (that was the best part of the visit for grad)!

Kat

ps other son’s stay at USNA also rivaled his brother’s at princeton

Some people need an environment that visually stimulates their artistic nature. D3 shuddered when she first saw D2’s campus. It is a clean, urban setting but has no frills as far as landscaping; it is plain but that is not anything that is important to D2. D3 ended up at Indiana University which is absolutely gorgeous in every season. Now that is not the primary reason D3 attends that school but it helped make the decision when a compromise was needed. Of course this is the daughter who, when staying in an old goat barn on a mission trip, set an empty cardboard box by her bunked metal cot, placed a scarf over it, and proceeded to arrange an assortment of candles and photos to make things “pretty”. The rest of us were cleaning out cobwebs and plugging holes in the screen door.

Sorry but I don’t know how any school can compare with Pepperdine. Every building has a windowed view of the Pacific Ocean…breathtaking. It’s built on a beautiful hill in Malibu. DD didn’t decide to apply there but she took more pics of that school than any other she visited.

I have seen alot of US campuses and I have to say that I agree with Pepperdine and Princeton. I also think Duke, Wake Forest, Ithaca, Cornell, Notre Dame, U of Virginia, Kenyon, U of San Diego, Stanford and Northwestern are quite pretty also.

there are a lot of pretty campuses - uw madison (those lakes), bucknell, carleton … it would be hard to choose.

Ah, Colgate. The prettiest campus I ever saw. One of my kids went there and, despite the glorious setting, was miserable and transferred. So much for the significance of a stunning campus.

I love Oxford and I love the urban feel, but I have to say the photos of Cambridge make it the winner in my book. I’ll have to actually get myself there for a visit.

In this country I’m a sucker for collegiate Gothic so of course I think Yale, Princeton, U of Chicago and West Point are all gorgeous. (West Point has a great setting to boot.)

The prettiest campus I’ve spent time on is Caltech - not only are the original buildings lovely, but the plantings are wonderful. Jacaranda, iris, myrtle, and wisteria all bloom like mad in the spring.

The beauty of the campus itself (lay-out, architecture, landscaping, etc) and the beauty of the view FROM the campus (in this case ocean) are not quite the same concept.

^ So true. We watched the Olympic water polo competition at Pepperdine in 1984. I remember the magnificent view but can’t recall any of the campus except the pool.

they’ve gotta be kidding with stanford. stanford’s fugly!

I was a little surprised by Cincinnati as well…but Forbes seems to like architecture and Cinti. has plenty of new buildings. They tore down some old monstrosities, built new or refurbished others, got rid of cars on campus so it’s very pedestrian friendly, and turned a huge asphalt parking lot into a landscaped area.

So I would give it “most improved” anyway!
