I am a high school Junior and I have recently received my ACT scores from my first attempt. I received the following:

Composite: 33
Reading: 34
English: 34
Math: 29
Science: 33

Here's what I'm concerned about: I have been seriously looking into Computer Engineering or Computer Science. I am worried that my low math score of a 29 will impair my ability to get into a good school or do well in engineering classes, even though my overall composite is fairly good. My parents have told me not to fret, and that I will be fine, but I find myself constantly concerned that the math score will bring down my chances. Does this score in comparison to the others mean I'm not suited for engineering?

I've only taken the ACT once, so I'm curious if I should retake it? I'm worried that because my other three were high, that I will end up with a lower overall composite even if I do improve on the math. In other words, I'm not sure whether I can get get the same scores again in the other three.

Any tips? Advice? Would you suggest taking it again and trying to improve the math score?

You already score high in the other section so review them and focus mainly on the math. The low math score won’t really deny you admission or impair your ability in future college math courses. After all, the highest level of math they test is trig, so polish up your Algebra skills. Math was my favorite and best subject, and I took AP Calc BC as a sophomore and I was surprised to get a 29. I never really practiced but I did have enough time because I didn’t study for the test and ended up guessing on the last 5-6 questions. I started reviewing in a 2 week session and drastically improved my scores, since I got used to the “feel” of the tests, and got faster at solving problems. I eventually raised my math score to a 34, and I ended up doing really well my second time of the ACT. I advise you to take it again, and review, with math as your focal point. I believe you have a great foothold on this test and math won’t be a problem for you. ACT math is about how fast and efficiently you can solve problems. Budgeting your time wisely and simply improving basic algebra and trig skills you get you in the high 30’s.
