Low ACT math score: Effect?

So I'm a rising senior and I took the ACT in April. I got a 29 composite, which I am happy with. But get this, I had 30 or above in every other category EXCEPT for math, where I got a 22!

Does this low ACT math score affect whether I will be admitted to Engineering or CompSci programs? I'm an Indiana resident so I'm obviously interested in Purdue, would I have less of a chance getting accepted into the E or CS programs there because of my score?

Most likely yes, it will hurt you. Take it again.

Yeah.

With those scores I recommend you don’t bother applying for engineering at all. Anywhere. Retake it.

If the math score was like 25, I would say just forget it but 21 is wayyy beyond the 25th percentile at Purdue. Take the SAT and get 650+ on math.

What about for CompSci?

Computer science is a borderline math degree. Seriously, retake the test.

A big part of CS is taking math and programming to solve computational problems and deal with data. You should take a few practice tests and take it again as soon as possible

That is a very low math score for an engineer. Do take it again, and maybe do a review session in math. My son, who is a junior engineering major, had a 35 on the ACT in math, and 800 on the SAT II in Math 2. And he still finds engineering very difficult! I doubt an individual with a math score as low as 22 would even get admitted to an engineering program. Really.

The SAT/ACT math scores are generally very poor predictors of math success in college. That being said, schools still require these scores for screening purposes, and your ACT score is a bit low for Purdue. Now, does that mean you won’t do well in the college math courses at Purdue? Absolutely not, but it certainly might affect your chances of getting in to the school in the first place.

Which math classes have you taken in high school, and how did you do in those classes?

I would also recommend taking the test again, if for nothing more than increase your chance of getting accepted.

Yes, that is a very low score in math to be accepted to an engineering program, and if it is a true reflection of your math ability means that it would be very difficult to be successful in engineering college classes.

Do you really want to be an engineer? Given that your math score is so much lower than your other sub-scores, I wonder if that is truly where your interests lie. What math and physics classes have you taken in HS, and how did you do in them?

Buy the Barrons ACT prep book for Math/Science. The math section is very good — complete review and drills and practice tests which show you how to get the right answer. It is only like $15.00 and welll worth the price.
