Recently there have been two major things I have been aiming at for college and life after; I want to live in the US and I want to do medicine. But the more I read about doing medicine in the US, the more I'm worrying that those two things are incompatible. Not only would the loans I'd have to get be enormous (It's not normal here for parents to pay for college) but a lot of med schools don't even take international students. I might be able to get US citizenship by the time I get to applying to med schools, but at the same time I might not, and if I don't manage to I gather it would be really hard to get in anywhere.
Also I'm having worries because I believe (although I'm not certain) that to practise as a doctor in the UK you have to have trained there, which would mean if I changed by mind about living on a different continent to my family, I would have to go back to college or switch jobs.
Although I'm only a freshman now, I have to start volunteering and stuff if I want to have any chance at getting into a med school here, but I'm not sure what to do. I was thinking that it may not be possible to go to the US, but it's been my dream for years and I'm not sure I could give it up. And to not do medicine would mean a serious rethink about what I will do, and my family think that's what I want to do now.
I'm sorry this is so long, but if anyone could give me advice on what to do, or if they've been in a similar situation themselves, that would be so helpful.

Please can someone comment, I’m really worried

Trolololol.

That could work, but I don’t really want to wait another 10 years plus before coming to the US, I’ve always wanted to go to college there

If you get really high stats, you may be able to get merit aid/full tuition at some lower ranked places. Venture over to the international students forum for some advice there. Remember that as a premed, your undergrad school doesn’t matter much. If you do well there, you can get into a US med school. Of course, top US universities meet full need even for internationals, but those are very difficult to be admitted to.

As for med school, you will have to take on debt. But you will graduate into a high paying job with lots of job security. You’ll be able to pay off those loans.

Just curious… What’s the appeal of the US for you?

Slipping away, just a heartbeat from disaster
Nothing could make me stay, close
your eyes and I’ll be gone
Turn the page, yeah, time to start another story
Slipping away, slipping away, time to move along

No reason to stay
oh, when I’m slipping away

Take a look at yourself, you’ve
been running in a circle
Round and round you go, you’re
a start without an end
Send you a line, yeah, from
the city of the gypsies
Running away, slipping away,
right behind the clouds

Slipping away
Slipping away
Nobody to pay
out, 'cause I’m slipping away

Look in the glass, I won’t
leave you my reflection
A future without a past, no
more road to take me back
Come if you will, just don’t
question my direction
Running away, slipping away, we can find the sun

Slipping away
Slipping away
got nobody to pay
and you’re slippin’ away

No more running in a circle
it’s time to move along
round, round, round we go
a start without an end
so I’m slipping away
Slipping away

^ Helpful
But thank you alwaysleah, I did presume I would have to go into debt as my parents will probably pay nothing towards university :(

Just found out I can almost certainly get US citizenship without having to live there first! I need to sort out details and stuff, but becuase one of my grandads lived in the US most of his life, I would qualify for naturalisation through a grandparent in section 322. At least, I hope so. If anyone has experience with naturalisation please comment :)

How much do your parents make? It will determine whether you can afford college in the US.

I did get Italian citizenship through my grandfather but I don’t think its the same as getting US citizenship… Not sure.

I need to check, but pretty sure it will be to much to qualify for any kind of aid. He has a very good job, although we have a big mortage and 4 kids. Also my brother’s off to uni in october, though they aren’t paying for it.
