Worried about my honors thesis!

Hi everyone,
I’m a junior at ASU, part of Barrett, and it’s time to start thinking about my thesis. I am an engineering major, and I have been working at a lab for the past few years so I am planning on continuing the thesis at the same lab. My PI got me started on a project, but most of it involves trying to use this new software, and using tons of differential equations. The material is ridiculously complex, and I’ve spent the past few weeks trying to get better at it but I’m really struggling, and I really don’t want to do this as my thesis anymore.
My PI asked me for an update tomorrow, and I don’t think I should try to do a project that is this stressful because I have other responsibilities senior year that I need to keep in consideration in addition to this thesis.
Would it be unprofessional for me to speak with him about changing my thesis project? Or What should I do?

It would be unprofessional and way too stressful to try to hide the fact that you are struggling. Be honest with him and I’m sure you can work something out.

^Agree with the poster above.

It would be worse for him to find out down the way that you’re struggling and have been hiding it from him. A thesis is a lot of work and big commitment, you don’t want to do it on a topic you dislike and struggle with. Be honest with him and if you have any alternative ideas bring those to the table to show him you still are committed to a thesis and engaged in doing work for it.

If he doesn’t let you change the topic (although I imagine it won’t be a big deal to change it) then maybe he can provide some resources to help you with the material.

Good advice given above. Part of training for industry or life or that mars mission is developing the courage to ask for help. You’re obviously talented, smart, hard working. And you are faced with a tenaciously difficult problem. Ask your advisor and colleagues for help. Your work life will be no different. That’s how you change the world, one problem at a time. Afterward, when you look back, you wonder why it seemed so difficult. Kick ass, you’ll nail this. Be tenacious!
