I got into Gabelli EA and I want to attend so badly but it’s so expensive. I ran the NPC and it said the cost would be 36k, which is accurate for my EFC which is 33k, but my parents cannot afford to pay 33k for school. I’m really conflicted because I don’t want to pass up on such an amazing school.
bump!
You can’t attend a school you can’t pay for. Do you have more affordable options?
i do and i actually got into northeastern last night i was wondering the same thing for it too. i just find it very disappointing that i’d have to give up a top tier school for another that has such low rankings and academics.
Unfortunately finances are part of the decision process for the vast majority of college students. If a school is unaffordable for 4 years then don’t attend.
Northeastern is a perfectly fine school (if that is an affordable option). If your parents can’t meet their EFC, you don’t really have the option to go to a school that requires that much money. I’d be concerned that every school is going to expect at least the FAFSA EFC amount except maybe in-state publics. Which can also be very good options.
Agree you can’t go if not affordable. Have you gotten the actual package from Fordham yet? Wait and see what they offer. How much of it is grants vs. loans/work study? Have a frank discussion with parents. What can they afford? Will there be other siblings in college any of the 4 years you’ll be attending? That can reduce costs. You can also apply to be an RA sophomore year which cuts room & board substantially. And, with proximity to NYC, paid internships for 15 - 20 hours a week are possible sophomore, junior, and senior year. And, lastly, have you applied to any financial safeties where you’re sure to a) be admitted and b) be able to afford/
So are you only now running the NPCs after applying to schools, rather than before? I hope you have some in state options, as your parents will have to pay close to their EFC almost everywhere.
My DD was accepted at Fordham. We knew the cost going in, we had hoped for some merit money, most Jesuit/Catholic schools are fairly generous with aid, even for B students, and can come back with numbers different from their NPC. We are a full freight family, our EFC is usually the whole amount of tuition. Example DD got $21k from Loyola-Chicago her NPC said $10k and DD2016 got $18k from Marquette and her NPC was $0.
DD2018 got -$0- from Fordham. Nothing about Fordham makes them worth $68,000 per year, maybe $45k, but definitely not $68k. Try Loyola-Chicago.
If you add tuition, fees, room and board, what’s the cost of northeastern?
(Note that northeastern has a better reputation nationally than Fordham).
Where else have you applied sand what does the NPC indicate for each?
My D has also been accepted to Fordham - its her #1 college with Northeastern as her #2 (Deferred so far), and Pitt as her #3 (Accepted). The final choice is unfortunately going to come down to $$ - will need merit $$ for Fordham and Northeastern if going to be in consideration vs Pitt (even though we are OOS). Don’t expect any FA as EFC too high - but still cannot afford $60K+ per year for 4 years with another D going to college in 2 yrs as well.
Have 8 other colleges in the running as well - 3 other acceptances and 5 waiting on RD along with Northeastern. No rejections so far. Net no closer to a decision and have a feeling this will go to the wire in April as will need all decisions and financials to make the final call.
Northeastern is ranked 40, Fordham is ranked 61.
Lab egg, how do you know it is zero? I thought numbers were released 2/1. Or were they released early? ( which would mean we are a zero also since we haven’t heard anything?
wait im not comparing fordham to northeastern- i am in the same situation for both. i have gotten acceptances from other schools like adelphi that have given me a lot of money that i could to, but they’re nothing compared to northeastern and fordham which are SO expensive that even a half tuition scholarship would not be affordable
Update: just got my financial aid information and I only got $7500 in scholarship and $5500 loan…guess I’m definitely not going to fordham
I’m sorry.
What are your other choices? Have you received your financial aid awards?
If not, some good colleges are still accepting applications.
So far my other choices are St. John’s University and Adelphi University. They gave me really nice scholarships and financial aid so I’ll discuss those choices.
Update on earlier post - My D only got $12.5K in scholarship and $5.5K loan - so like anniehhh not enough and rules Fordham out of the running. Fordham is a great school and my Ds #1 choice but not worth $60K per year when she has other offers with COA coming in between $30-40K after awards.
