I'm a female interested in an aerospace engineering or computational media major with music technology minor. I have excelled in all mathematics classes (highest average award) and I have many EC's and leadership awards. I am extremely involved in the Fine Arts at my high school and have been in honor bands, All-state choirs, and I am the drum major as well as percussion section leader this year. I am going into my senior year of high school. I feel good about everything in the application except for the fact that my number are just below their average.

SAT Comp: 1760 first time taking it and will retake again in October
GPA: 3.98
Class Rank: 21 out of 283

I have taken all honors classes and 2 APs. Only one was offered at my high school in Junior year and I took AP Stat online. I finished AP Stat with a 99. I finished honors algebra/trig with a 102. I will have taken 5 mathematics courses when I graduate.

I understand how Georgia Tech's admissions have become much more competitive and am worried I will not be accepted only because of my numbers. I am applying early action this year.

Please give any advice/comments. Thanks.

You never know, but based on who got in last year, your test scores are your main obstacle. It seems unlikely that you can raise your SAT enough to match the average from last year. (Avg admitted EA 2190 and enrolled a bit less I think) However, many students do better on the ACT. Have you considered that? Good luck!

I thought of a couple more things. Your strong interest in a particular ec (music) will help. They don’t care about class rank but do value essays and course rigor. It is not held against you if your high school doesn’t offer a lot of ap as long as you take advantage of what is there. Send in your ap scores if they were good. Take a calculus class, online if necessary. They also seem to look to build a diverse class. If you are from georgia you have an edge.

@stilltay I’m taking all AP classes offered plus duel enrollment with college classes. I’m taking AP calc 2nd semester this year. I’m hoping that the ratio of men to women in the aerospace field will boost my chances. I am a decent writer and have taken full advantage of difficult courses… I’m hoping for the best.

They don’t take your major into consideration when you apply.

@MichiganGeorgia Would it be appropriate to mention my interest in the field in the essays?

Yes it would however they aren’t supposedly going to look at what the ratio is of men/women in a certain major when deciding whether to admit you or not. However being a female does help. If you are in state that would help too, However I think you know that your SAT score is low compared to the average GT student. What is the breakdown of your SAT score? Is there one section that is a lot lower than the others? If so I would concentrate on raising that section. Also take the ACT. remember they will super score so if for example you don’t do well on the math on the SAT but do well on it on the ACT they will use the ACT math score.
