worried I won't get into college

so I am a junior in high school I have a 2.0 gpa and I have only taken .5 of a credit of foreign language and won’t be taking any more. I don’t have the greatest GPA but what would be your suggestions? please I am in need of help

  1. Improve your grades significantly
  2. Start at a community college

I really don’t want to go to a community college.

Seems like you don’t want to get into a college.

If you want to go to a 4 year university, you need at least a minimum of 2 years foreign language. You stated you will not be taking any more foreign language classes so it is up to you. Consider a CC or take the 1.5 years needed and work on that GPA.

^Not always true. Different colleges have different HS course requirements.

Best thing to do is simply work harder. If you ace the rest of your classes, you could potentially bring your GPA to near 3.0.

What state do you live in? Or do your parents have a lot of money to spend on college?

There was an “Ask the Dean” blog post here on CC that noted some colleges do not require a foreign language for admission. But it wasn’t a lot of help in identifying them.

Colleges look at gpa and test scores to try to ascertain whether prospective students will be academically successful once admitted. You might reconsider a year of community college to show that you can be successful. I urge you to visit one, meet some professors and sit in on a class. You might be pleasantly surprised.

College isn’t for everybody. One thing that’s wrong with this society (and this site) is that it makes it seem that everybody has to go to college. However you can be perfectly successful and make a decent amount of money without going to college. You can go into trade school and be an electrician, plumber etc. and make a lot of money and have no debt  my uncle is an electrician and makes a six figure salary with benefits.

However if you feel that college is for you, I would recommend community college for the first two years. Best of luck!!

This is not necessarily true, there are plenty of 4 year colleges that don’t require this. The top colleges do, but this student with a 2.0 isn’t going to apply to those schools anyway.

Let’s be realistic. This student likely has 5 semester already under his/her belt with a 2.0 GPA (solid C average). He only has next semester and the fall semester of senior year before grades are sent in with applications. He isn’t going to get up to a 3.0 even if he aces his classes. The best he can get to on a 4 point scale is a 2.57. I would assume someone posting with “MIT” in their user name could do that basic math, but apparently not.

OP, I do agree with other posters that if the best you can muster in high school is a C average, then you really should start at a community college even if you don’t want to. College is generally harder than high school. You need to prove out your ability to get better grades if possible.

@intparent I can definitely do basic math (and I am a math major). But I forgot about senior spring usually not factoring into the application. Also, one could take more courses and ace them to bring GPA up more, but probably not easily.

I would take foreign language. Take a summer class and take it your senior year to meet the two year requirement most colleges have. Get your grades up and do the prep work for the ACT/SAT.

Check this link and look at the schools.

You didn’t say where you live. Usually an in state school is the best deal. Look at what the schools require. You still have time to take more foreign language or other requirements.

@sal2579 Why do you want to go to college? What are your goals? What is your intended major?
