I was looking at other foreign language posts and it sounds like it's a make or break situation. I only have 2, and will never have 3. Does it really completely take me out of the race for good schools with this?

Only if they require 3.

Why didn’t you take more? Are you already fluent in a language other than English?

Most schools required 2 years of foreign languages, but many recommend 3 or 4 years. In addition, they want 2-4 years of the same language. With only 2 years of foreign language, it will disqualify you for those schools that require 3 or more years and hurt your chance for those that recommend 3 or 4 years of foreign language. You may try summer class or community college (1 semester may equal 1 HS year) to make up the difference.

While it would be preferable to fit in more foreign language, if you can’t, you can’t. Just be your own best self, and trust that the admissions officers will be able to understand your situation. Yes, students do get into X, Y, and Z each year with only two years of foreign language. Whether you would be able to do so will depend on everything else in your application.
