Hi. I’m a MI student from a very competitive “feeder” school into UMich (accept around 50% of applicants each year from our HS) but I’ve had a few roadblocks through high school. Here’s my stats:
White, male, middle class income immigrant from eastern europe from right before freshman year
GPA: 3.65W 3.45UW
ACT: 33, 33M 28R 35M 34S
School doesn’t rank
Took 10 AP classes
My issue here is that my GPA peaked 9th grade and went down the years after
ECs: Robotics (with leadership positions) all 4 years
Model UN since 10th grade
Science Clubs since freshman year
Economics and politics club since sophomore year (with leadership positions)
National Honors Society 11th-12th grade
Helped lead a programming club in the last 2 years
worked as an intern for IT during 10th grade summer
Applying for CompSci major with possible International relations minor
Looking for a good college town. I’d be fine with either urban or suburban.
I don’t really want a small school, somewhere on the bigger side Ig. Not overly massive.
I will be applying for financial aid, but the amount will not influence my choice a whole lot
Any recommendations for schools to apply to are very appreciated!!
Was thinking of having UMich LSA be one of the schools I apply to, but would that be too much of a reach?
Thx!
Are you fluent in other languages? If so, this, along with your background in Eastern Europe might booster your application with an intention to minor International Relations. Your stats are within the range of the profiles of the 2019 entering Class at UMich: Average GPA: 3.9; ACT 32-35 mid 50th % range, except your GPA is on the low side; you do have a chance. Run your own race; don’t keep comparing with your fellow students’ stats. Send in the test scores; craft your essays, ask for recommendation letters, apply and good luck.
University of Wisconsin, Madison might be a good fit also.
UMich will be a reach due to the uwGPA of 3.45, but defintely apply.
Per the CDS, the two most important factors are uwGPA and course rigor. Those 10 AP classes will help you, as it relates to course rigor. Here’s a % breakdown of GPA’s for enrolled freshman Class of 2022:
I would assume that a lot of recruited athletes would be represented in the lower two categories, but I don’t know that with certainty. BTW, UMich doesn’t use weighted GPA’s. Good luck!
@TomR16 - take a look at Arizona State. My son is a CS major. They have a top 50 program. My DS is in Barrett Honors College. Even though you feel your stats are low, you might be able to get into Barrett. The advantage to Barrett is it’s an ~8,000 student college within a huge college. The weather is definitely better than MI.
If you need financial aid, I would not apply to out of state public schools. It’s not worth paying $60K for a computer science degree. You will get equal opportunities with a degree from an instate university. But that’s up to your parents and you to decide.
I’d recommend you apply to instate universities other than UMich.
