A lot of people from my school are attaching resumes and extra information with their applications; I was considering doing this for harvard, particularly as there aren't alot of essays for me to mention some stuff i'd like to, even though I'm submitting an optional essay.

Does anyone know harvard's policy on submitting extra stuff...they say on their website that they've left the application as open as possible to allow applicants to show harvard who they are blah blah, but does that neccessarily imply that they don't mind resumes and stuff....especially becuz some of the other schools that Im applying to (Stanford) explicitly ask applicants not to submit extra information....

My kid sent a resume and extra stuff and was admitted. The admissions office is clear that they read everything that is sent in. It is absolutely fine for Harvard (of course, assuming that the "extra stuff" is relevant and not overkill); there's nothing lost by sending it.

My son had two extra recommendations sent in. One was from a med school professor for whom he'd written a computer program that was cited in several papers, the other was a software company for whom he'd done freelance programming. Since his high school didn't have any opportunities in computer programming beyond the AP course he took as a freshmen, these recommendations showed a level of expertise that no one at school could really speak to.

^I think that's the key - when the activity or expertise level cannot be addressed by school recs - either teacher or counselor. But in addition, as twinmom says too, Harvard is also a little more welcoming and less structured on additional materials - some schools are so rigid in what they accept by way of supplementary material, it's hard for some students to forcefit themeselves into that mold.

i sent a resume with mine, it's nice b/c you can cram in all the things you didnt get to include in other parts of your app
also it just makes you feel good when you have a whole page of how great you are haha
