I got into psychology at HSS. I didn't get my financial aid package back yet and I don't think I'll be getting much. I don't really like the prospect of draining all my parents' money, so...is the heavy tuition worth the prestige and excellence of this school???

Depends what other psych departments you got accepted to at other schools. We have several MIT professors now working here in our psych department; my three best friends are psych majors and they love the curriculum, but I’m sure that changes depending on whom you talk to. Especially in Cognitive Science, Linguistics, and Robotics/Psych, we’re definitely top dog.

well, do the old fashioned “checking of the rankings”. You can get salary and placement statistics from CMU’s website (shows where seniors get jobs and go to grad school) for psychology if you are curious.

I’m inclined to think that if you’re good enough to get into CMU then you’re probably good enough to get into a solid school with a good aid package, but we all know individual situations vary. Good luck to you.

I’m not sure where I will be going with my career because my future prospects are very flexible at the moment and I will not necessarily be in a field specifically involving psychology.

What if my parents have enough to pay full tuition for four years and I won’t end up in debt? Would it still be worth it? I don’t find the debt unappealing, just the money, even if my parents have it.

Carnegie Mellon is a great school. I think it will put you in a great position no matter what field you eventually choose.
