My S scored a 31 (E-35, M-27, R-33, S-28, english/writing not yet scored).

His SAT's were R-710, M-600, W-650 (1960). PSAT 203 - he'll be commended which we're thrilled about!

GPA not good, about 3.15

He's obviously not looking at Ivies, but good LAC's or bigger schools (Clark, Beloit, Pitt).

He doesn't need to bother with SAT again since his ACT is better, but how much improvement could he expect on the ACT? He did no prep for either test btw.

I personally think a 31 is a very good ACT score, and definitely within the range for the schools you're looking at. Assuming the writing score is also very good, you're probably safe putting the testing portion of your college voyage behind you. However, if you want to take a shot at increasing the score with really no downside, take it again in June and then be done.

Thanks for the input. He thinks he can do better, since the test was his very first exposure to the ACT, and he's unsure of how he did on the writing portion. If he's willing (unlike he would be to retake the arduous SAT), there's no downside.

Do you know if separate scores can be submitted for writing or is the submission all at one sitting?

One thing to consider......with a GPA of 3.15, your son's school choices will already be limited to a certain group of schools (of which you have chosen a few)....An ACT of 31 will EASILY be at or above the 25-75% range at that level of schools; there is really no benefit in a retake.....I think that many on CC overestimate the benefit of higher SAT/ACt scores; they cannot over compensate for certain GPA's.....Yes, you are correct, there is no downside, but please advise him that a higher score will probably not increase his "chances".....

Now, that being saud, there may be some of these schools that offer merit money based on SAT/ACT scores.....you may want to check on those prior to undertaking another sitting.....

I'm all too aware of the limitations imposed by his gpa and it's an ongoing struggle for me to understand how unimportant it seems to be to him. He's picking it up this semester, but realistically still won't be much above 3.2.

My hope is that if he's borderline with a 3.15 gpa, an outstanding ACT of 33 might sway the adcoms.
