Would 20 units for my 1st semester be overkill?

Don’t do it. Even if you can do it, don’t. 13 units may be too little, but what’s the worst that can happen? You’re bored half the day and you get a 4.0. That’s not so bad if you learn to utilize your leisure time for relaxation or extracurriculars. Set yourself up for success with a strong start. Also, it’s nice to see As on your transcript. If you really don’t like the idea of taking 13 units, then take no more than 16.

^ yeah, agreed 13-17 sounds like a nice range for credits. I mean I’m sure if you’re even considering 20 credits that you will probably invest the required amount of time to succeed in them, but it’s your first semester and I assume you’ll also want to do other stuff than just classes right?

From what I understood, people in L&S generally take 12-14 (that’s including a seminar or whatever). But you are mentioning that you are set on switching to BioE, so looking at the College of Engineering Announcement ([College of Engineering Announcement — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](Undergraduate Guide - Berkeley Engineering)), as I am sure you have, it’s really well blocked out and shows that you should be around 16 or 17 units. If you really have an urge to do something with theater, then I would almost guarantee that there are clubs out there.

I am an incoming EECS freshman that researched this stuff quite a bit… but I may be totally wrong.

I hope you get into the BioE 10

^yeah I agree with crystal knight, most engineering grads takes 16-17 units per semester or if they have enough AP credits lined up, take a 13 credit semester their first semester at Cal. At least that’s what the CalSO lady said.

I’m currently BioE (hoping to switch into EE), and I’m taking 17 credits, three technical classes (Math53, Physics7A, Comp Sci61A), a writing class (South Asian R5), and a BioE 24 seminar, and she told me that was the norm for BioE and EE kids, so I guess I’d recommend against taking more than 17 credits your first semester.

Actually I was thinking about taking 17 units, except 6 of them are P/NP lol. It would be 3 legit classes with finals, a seminar, pol sci 179, and two decals. Dunno if that’s too much but I really want to take both decals :(

Given that you have already done AP Calc BC and AP Chem, the material in both of those classes is not too difficult. However, the issue, as has already been mentioned, is that Chem 1A is a lot of work. I am not so sure about Math 1A because I never took that. Music 27 itself is really easy, so it doesn’t really add much to your time except the time attending class. Not so sure about the other classes.

Your schedule is certainly doable, but you might want to ask yourself how much time you really want to dedicate to classwork. I took 2 semesters of 20 units in order to fulfill requirements and such and found myself skipping classes at times and compromising time that I would’ve rather spent with friends or doing research or w/e.

Words of advice: Don’t do a 20 unit class schedule when/if you do Organic Chemistry and its lab.

I would ask for special permission to go above the L&S unit limit and just take like 160 units the first semester. 20 units is for amateurs.

^lol

I agree. I’d rather get a 4.0 for my 13 units than a 3.2 for my 20. That said, I’m also doing 20… :stuck_out_tongue: But I have my reasons and I’m preparing, so.

I had a very similar schedule first semester. I took these classes:

Math 53
Chem 1a
BioE10
Slavic R1A
BioE24

Although, I could handle it, I had a very hard time especially because of math. I see that you opted out for taking math 1a which is a very good choice since math is very different at berkeley. Good luck and my suggesting is to stick with your 4 core class.

That schedule is doable. You should be fine if you put in the work.
