Okay...i'm starting to have second thoughts about taking 17 units

So i'm going to be a freshman at cal in the fall. i originally signed up under chemistry in L&S when i applied, but now i want to change to bioE, which means i have to transfer to CoE. Therefore, i'm taking the classes for BioE:
Math 1a 4 units
Chem 4a 4 units
Comparative Lit. 4 units
BioE 24 1 unit
BioE 10 4 units

now i've already gotten a 5 on Calc AB in high school, but that was my junior year and i took stats in senior year, so I figured i should do Math 1A instead of Math 1B, but the thing is i'm guessing it will be good review rather than torture or whatever. I also got 5's on AP Lit and Lang, but i wanted to take Com. Lit anyway because i heard that AP's don't always count towards credits for med school.

and is it too much to add a decal or something?

maybe o_o they all sound like hard classes

edit: actually no one is a seminar so @_@ if you're good at math and science i think your four classes + a seminar should be fine.

i do like math and science a lot, i don't think i would have been able to handle classes like this if it had to do with gov't or economics or something. anyone else?

if it's too much, just drop a class once the semester begins.

Hey, my schedule is almost exactly the same as yours - I'm in BioE.

Math 1A
Chem 1A
BioE 24
BioE 10
Philosopy 6
E98 (decal)

I'm doing 18 units (the decal counts as 1), but it seems like such a "fun"/easy 1 unit that I don't really think it'll be difficult to add a small, fun decal to your schedule.

drop the bioe seminar

anon5524485: Just curious why you’re recommending the OP drop the seminar?

if they want to minimize their units, that is the easiest way

Um, actually, dropping the seminar would not make any difference. Majority of people dozed off in those extremely esoteric seminars (at least for freshman; I bet 95% of people have no clue what the speaker is talking about), and paid attention in the last minute to get the "magic word". That's it - zero workload.

Also, IMO:
Starting math from 1A is a complete waste of time.

If you are worry about the grade E10 is probably the better option. From the course surveys, the type of work you'll get from BioE10 sounds more annoying and less "fun" compared to E10

Tau Beta Pi, California Alpha Chapter - Course Surveys

so the seminars aren't that work intensive then? i'm not so worried about taking 16 units, but for some reason 17 units seemed daunting to me at first. however, if seminars are okay and math 1a will be a "waste of time", it doesn't seem as intimidating as before

^CoE makes you do at least the second semester R&C, so do an R#B or L&S R44 and do some extra writing course if you are pre-med.

Yea, just keep in mind that units don't tell the whole story. While 17/18 units might seem a lot, both of your schedules look fine. 3 techs, 1 breadth, and 1 or 2 seminar/decals... The seminar/decals are nothing, the breadth should be that bad, and the techs aren't super tough.

And for both of you BioE's, I'd recommend just taking the highest math you place into. Though Math 1B is known to be significantly tougher than Math 1A, you're gonna have to take it anyways. And there's no guarantee that you do well in Math 1A either. Lower divison math isn't terribly important for most people, so I'd recommend just getting through it as fast as you can. It'll give you an opportunity to take something more important to you or at least more interesting for you later down the line.

thank you guys so much for your help!
